Brain Dump
This is thoughts as they come out–no organization.
- This is the slowest week I have ever had in my whole life! Well, a slight exaggeration there since anyone who has been pregnant and waiting for the due date knows that is the slowest time! Six more days until I get a new hip.
- Today I am going to do nothing. Tomorrow I am getting my hair cut. Friday I am giving this apartment the last cleaning before company comes on Saturday.
- I know the day {next Tuesday} but I still do not know the time for the surgery.
- Today I will get a phone call from a pre-op nurse about anesthesiology. Perhaps this person will be able to tell me the time I will be having surgety. I was scheduled to get this call yesterday morning but Fred asked me to go to the doctor’s with him. The pre-op nurses were very nice when I called and told them the day before that I needed to move my phone interview. It amuses me that when the appointment is in the morning, they say 10 am. When the appointment is in the afternoon, they say between 4:30 and 5pm. Apparently by the end of the day, they are not on schedule. But I don’t mind. I was so pleased there was a cancellation that I would have agreed even if it had been at midnight!
- I have a seat to put on the toilet to raise it.
- I need to put the phone numbers Fred will need after the surgery on a card for him.
- Fred has an appointment with a cardiologist next Thursday. The hope is that something can be done with drugs about this afib.
- I will probably still be in hospital next Thursday. The packet of information said that I will be there two or three days excluding the day of surgery.
- I have one pair of my new glasses. I must call LensCrafters today to enquire about the other pair, the looking-at-computer glasses.
- I have my last massage before surgery on Sunday.
- I need to think about what clothes I need to come home after the surgery.
- I think it is odd to be told to remove nailpolish from fingers and toes before surgery.on my hip.

The reason for removing nailpolish is so they can see any change in colour in your nailbed, e.g. turning blue. – presumably from lack of oxygen.

I meant to say while under anaesthetic.:)

I think the nail polish interferes with the monitors that they clip on the fingertips to monitor blood O2 saturation. You know, for a slow day, it still sounds like you’re getting a lot done, and have a lot on your plate.

Wow, only 6 more days! I’m sure you will be so glad when the day finally arrives!! I understand the nail polish on the fingers as they put a monitor on one finger, but the toes? I never go that one either. L HOpe Freds drs. sppointment goes o.k. and that some sort of meds will help his afib. Hugs, M

You are very organized! I have to say that I could use a higher toilet seat these days. It’s difficult to get up!

Hopefully the time will pass, surgery will be done and your recovery quick.

I bet it IS a lot like that last week of pregnancy, now that you mention it! I really sympathize with you! Slow weeks like that seem soooo endless! hugs, Weesprite

The removing of nail polish is so they can monitor your blood oxygen levels by seeing the colour of your nails. Purple nails is a bad sign, apparantly, while pink ones are good. I got told this once by a nurse when I was due to have surgery and had to take my nail polish off. You can’t wear acrylic nails either, for the same reason.

Gee. I come here to see what you’re up to and I get an education about nail polish and surgery. Interesting. You need to find something to read to distract yourself, methinks. Otherwise time has a way of d-r-a-g-g-i-n-g when there is a pivotal event coming up.

My guess on the nail polish is so that they can monitor any discoloration, which would have to do with oxygen. Otherwise, it might be some kind of contamination issue..in case some of it flakes off or something. I think you’re doing a terrific job of filling up the time while you wait with things that need doing. Keeps you from going stir-crazy.

Some very intelligent notes about the nail polish issue. And there was I thinking it was so that the surgeon wouldn’t be distracted by your brightly coloured nails… 😉

I have been told to remove nail polish before surgery in the past, but this last time I had my toenails painted and nothing was said.

I can’t believe that it’s only 6 more days! Wow. (((Hugs)))

gosh – I can imagine how time has dragged for you, but for me, I’m surprised we are already there! Where has the year gone. Sean once drew on my bottom before surgery because he knew they would turn me over and he though it would make the doctors laugh. 🙂 I’m sure it did. Serves the doctor right for complaining that I had too many ‘love handles’.

You need to remove the polish because they watch your circulation by looking at your nails. Take loose, comfortable clothes that you can get into easily. Mom said that her sweat suits were her favorite, but it’s the wrong time of year for that… I just know you’re going to do GREAT!!!!!!! Love ya! ~M

I went through that with surgery. I could not understand why I couldn’t have things like my wedding ring on, but off it came. They said it had to do with infection. Many strong thoughts and prayers for you.
