Another Entry

I have a chilblain. I have not had one of these since I was a child. Before the year I was sixteen, I had them every winter mostly on my feet but occasionally on my hands, too. When I was sixteen, I took a part-time job which was  so close to my aunt’s house, where I then lived, that I walked too and from work. This improved my circulation enormously so I no longer came into the house and thrust my frozen feet and hands as near to the fire as I could get them. {Chilblains are, apparently, caused by warming up cold feet and cold hands too quickly, which is what I have been doing to my poor feet by wrapping them in a hot pad set to high.}

Anyway, this one is on the little toe of my left foot and wearing a shoe and sock over it is causing me to limp even more than I was doing already with the hip! The only treatment for them is NOT to scratch them and since they itch horribly when they get warm, to apply an anti-itch cream and protect them from pressure!
I am writing these very short entries with the Mac Book because I really need to get used to this squishy-feeling keyboard and to learn how to do things. I have found out how to do a lot of things all by myself–but, Gemma, I would never have found out how to make the page bigger without you telling me where to look, so again, I thank you! Another diarist, aisha, told me about Apple C and Apple V which are the equivalents of CTRL C and V in a PC and this was very useful. I am getting a book but at the rate I am going, I will have a lot of this stuff worked out before the book arrives. But one thing I don’t see on this keyboard that I miss is a key that will allow me to back space! There must be SOME way I can do this because it is such a useful thing to be able to do! So, Mac users? How do I do this when there appears to be no key that says "back space"?

I have downloaded Thunderbird {but not yet configured it properly} so I can send and receive mail on this desktop, OpenOffice, and Firefox. On my PC, I use Paint Shop Pro for working with my photographs. I don’t know if there is a Mac version for this but I wouldn’t buy it anyway because ever since Corel took over Jasc, the program has been really spoiled. Anyway, what I really would like is an open-source program if there is one available. Any suggestions? I will buy one if I have to but, of course, prefer free!

I know zip about Macs, to be honest with you. I’m only assuming (and we know how dangerous that can be) that it would work on a Mac as well. frank

I never knew what chilblains were ’til now! I may have had them before. I have often warmed my cold hands under warm running water, or gotten into a very warm bath to thaw myself out! hugs, Weesprite

hmmm, thats interesting.

March 4, 2007

I’ve read about chilblains in books, and knew that they had something to do with fingers and toes and winter, but not a clue as to what they actually were. Now I know what it was that I kept getting all the time when I was a kid! And every now and then, as an adult.

well, ya learn something new everyday. I had never heard of a chilblain until I read this entry.

I’m afraid I don’t know much about the kind of software you’re looking for, but maybe other readers will. I’ve often wondered exactly what a chilblain is. I had the vague notion that it was something people only got in the 19th century or earler, and that somehow it was an affliction that had been conquered. I certainly didn’t want to be educated on that subject at your expense! Finally, here’s an article that may interest you concerning the disappearance of winter in Vermont: http://www.cnn.com/2007/WEATHER/03/04/changing.winter.ap/index.html Take care.

Ouch! Sorry about the chilblain. Hope it heals quickly. Also sorry about the Mac issues. I have never used a Mac so can’t be helpful in the least!

you are learning so much so fast, good for you. I hope your toe feels better fast. Ci vedo dopo :^)

Use the delete button to backspace. One of the few things I do know.

March 4, 2007

In 1988 I first used a MAC. In email, at that time anyway, email did not automatically word-wrap. You had to do it manually. Then the backspace-I remember reading something about “control+H” both backspaces AND erases the words–but just backspace (I guess delete?)–just backspaced. I think I have that right. Anyway..I worked at Sprint headquarters. “WE” were becoming the governors basically of sales plans, etc. The field managers hated us…we were “corporate.” You know, that “new company reorganization” sort of thing. Sprint was only 2 years old at the time. I was a secretary at the time-my boss had me typing a letter to the field managers asking them to set up “analysis” –I don’t recall the rest of the sentence. Well, I got to the end of the line and could only type “a-n-a-l” – so I “Control+H” ‘d it and went to the next line. I KNOW the “ANAL” was GONE. I’d actually printed that page out I’m pretty sure. LATER that day I heard my boss laughing. The email went through “…call for your anal…{next line} analysis..” SO…field managers were calling asking to set up their “anal analysis” — and they felt like THAT was what they were getting since we had all these new rules

..and “do’s and don’ts..” — It sort of broke the ice and everyone laughed….BUT I WAS HORRIFIED. I’d always been such a perfectionist so this was horrible to me. So when I think of MAC,I think of that. It was years ago. I guess I’m a PC geek, I don’t like Macs much..but haven’t used one since then. I just don’t like how they’re not compatible with various other softwares PLUS some internetproviders have trouble with certain things with them. WHat I do recall is that you can figure out lots of stuff ourself. I think Gates copied off Mac more with their main screen to tell the truth. They’re very similar…just have to play around a bit to see how they translate some things–but usually somewhat easy to do. GOOD LUCK! YOu sure do well with all this new learning..whether it be software, language, or whatever you choose. You impress me & inspire me so very much!

I’ve heard about chilblains but never had a real idea of what they are. It sounds something like frostbite. Ouch!
