And This Morning…
Italian Phrase of the Day: Ha l’albergo una piscina od una palestra? Does the hotel have a pool or a gym?
My comment on this: Non volo bene alle palestre. Preferisco la piscina. I do not like gyms. I prefer a pool.
Today I have a massage. This is the massage that was scheduled last week which I cancelled because I didn’t want to drive in the heavy snow. Now, a week later, there is no snow and the temperature yesterday was more like spring than winter!
I read an interesting article this morning in the New York Times online about classes offered in colleges to teach people how to be happy. I actually believe this, you know. I think a person can learn to be happy. Apparently, according to this article, these courses are very popular with students. To sum it all up ever so briefly, as my sister used to say, "I do not smile because I am happy. I smile to make myself happy." And, as I say, "Fake it until you make it!" Well, the whole concept is actually more complex than this. Apparently happiness gained through helping others is longer-lasting than happiness gained through indulging oneself. I just went back to my mail program to see if I could provide the link but it has gone because I automaticially move these headlines emails into my trash folder when I have finished reading and then I have Eudora set to dump everything in the trash folder automatically when I close the program.
Today:
- Breakfast. Much to my surprise, I am hungry! Well, perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised since Usually I get up around 7 and today it was 8:30!
- Italian –More work with the numbers and some practice in conjugating verbs. I am using the new grammar book that we will use when class starts so this should give me a leg-up in the grammar part anyway…
- go for a walk
- clean off the table in the dining room
- put out the new bird feeder
- look into the instructions for my new yogurt maker
QUOTATION FOR THIS MONTH: If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment. — Marcus Aurelius
Until later….
I love your quote of the day – it’s SO what I needed to read right now. Thanks! xxx

I agree that you can choose or learn to be happy.
Warning Comment
I am a firm believer that happiness is a choice. And if it can be chosen it can be learned.

I’m glad that it’s the quote of the MONTH because reading it every day helps reinforce it in my slippery brain. I’d like to hear more about making oneself happy. I loved that video you shared.

You have a yogurt maker? That is wonderful! What a neat idea.

Ditto Eden32’s note. Some people wouldn’t be happy if they had a million dollars and were just starting l.ife as a 21 year old.

Oooh, a yogurt maker! That sounds fun. That was one of the things that was a “must-have” in the book “French Women Don’t Get Fat”! I’ll look forward to hearing how your yogurt turns out. p.s. – I had a little giggle at the Italian phrase, thinking about my trip to Italy… I’m told that we stayed in fairly good hotels, and I was happy to get a bath tub (once in the whole trip!) instead ofjust a drain and a shower head in the bathroom. I’m totally with you on your second phrase, though. Give me a pool any time!

Ah a massage, sounds so wonderful for a Sunday to have a massage.

I made chili last week. It is gone, but I would love a new recipe with cinnamon. Can you share Fred’s recipe. I am already salivating!

yes I think you are right on the happiness front. I’ve decided to fake it till i make it and it does work.

I’m off to church and then grocery shopping. I’ve got some serious reading to do this afternoon. I love your quote, btw, it’s a good one for me. Have a great Sunday!

I really have to agree with you about the learning to be happy.

Thank you for your request to be added to my faves list. Welcome! I don’t write often but I do enjoy reading and noting. I look forward to getting to know yoU.

very true!

I misread “massage” as “message” and wondered what you were talking about. Oooops… 🙂

I learned the secret your sister knew, when I studied Buddhism. Buddhist teachers always say “SMILE”….and I found that when I do smile, I soon feel happy. So now, most of the time when I take walks ‘n stuff, I walk along smiling! :o) !! hugs, Weesprite

At this point I’m applying for jobs that are open in Feb. and March. They’re for people who’ve left mid-year. Plus, jobs at colleges for other positions. Hence the worry about not hearing. Schools haven’t even posted jobs for summer yet… I’m just applying for immediate openings. It’s upsetting that even places that are “desperate to fill” a position won’t even call me. As for the doctor- of course I’ll go. It’s just one of those things that it’s worrisome. And when pain subsides you think ‘well maybe this wasn’t a big deal.’ *shrug* I’ll go though.

are fingers external?,..o.0

I would think there is a fine line between learning to be happy vs. talking yourself into being happy. The former is healthy, while the latter could be dangerous. I wonder what the qualifications of a “happiness professor” would be?

Amen to the quote of the month! 🙂

I have a favourite who has become big on the whole make-yourself-happy thing!!! It’s doing wonders for her…

I tagged you! Read my recent entry to find out what I’m talking about 🙂

Oh, I do believe that doing things for others makes us happy.

I agree with you about a person being able to learn to be happy. I wish you happiness today my friend. BTW: did you get much response about doing a traveling art journal?
