Second Entry
I just got back to the apartment find Fred gone. He is, I know, tooling around in his "new" air-conditioned car. I hope he remembered to get gas before he left! 
I went to Walmart and to the Christmas Tree Store. I really didn’t intend to buy but in the latter store, I did see a hamburger patty maker which Fred had mentioned wanting. Really, what I wanted {besides getting out of the house and away from The Packing} was a couple of "thinking about you" cards to send to the shut-in lady I correspond with. Well, correspond implies back-and-forth, doesn’t it. I have been writing to her since last November and she has replied twice. Actually, I was thrilled that she did this because she has diabetes and is legally blind and so I know it is not easy for her. I got my first answer when I wrote after a few weeks and said that I hoped I wasn’t boring her with accounts of my life and she wrote back to say I was living the sort of life that she would like to be living! So, I write once a week and occasionally send little "thinking of you" cards.
Eventually, I go into Walmart where they have had rather cute friend cards for under a dollar. Well, they used to. Now all their cards are $2 or more, So, I decided to get two packets of pretty blank cards in sets of 10 for about $2.50. Then, when I go over to the Christmas Tree Shop, I find some for $1.00 a packet! So, now I have enough to send her for a while. On the way out, I saw Staples and stopped off there for ink for my printer. It doesn’t desperately need it, but I like to have some on hand. And, since I decided to look into making some note cards for my shut-in lady from my own pictures, I want to be sure I have ink when I need it.

gosh, it’s been so long since i’ve gotten a piece of personal snail mail. i miss writing my friend in kansas. maybe we should start doing that again. i hope fred has a wonderful drive in his new to him new car. i know it feels sort of confining not to have your own wheels. take care,

What man could resist riding around on new wheels? None that I know! I don’t think FL has Christmas Tree Shops… but I know them well! Problem with them was, I could never go and not buy anything! Just too much fun!!!!!!

That is nice – getting something in the mail is much more uplifting than e-mail somehow. How does she read the notes etc? Does someone read them to her? What kind of car did Fred plump for in the end?

Before I left Walmart they were doing price changes. Alot of their prices increased tremendously. Some of ourbooks went up $3,4,5 even 6 dollars. That is alot for Walmart. Usually it only goes up a few cents.

I love the idea of hand-written correspondence. I should do it more, I suppose, because it’s SO fun to get stuff. And kudos to you for taking care of someone who doesn’t want to be forgotten.

Since my daughter has left on her mission, I’ve been writing to her at least once a week (and she has been to me). It had been so long since I’d done much more than send a card or an email, it was refreshing to actually write a real letter! You’re a good friend to do that for her.

You have blank cards now? But you’ve given away the calligraphy pens! Guess you’ll have to be creative, but then again I know you won’t have any problem coming up with what to write or how to present it.

I have an OD friend in Australia that send me packs of letters she writes and saves up. I love it.

My mother and David’s mother and I write back and forth. I have to chuckle when I get a letter from my mom addressed to Mrs. David ——:) Before David and I married she addressed my letters to me using my first married name – Mrs. Michael —-:) Tis okay, though, I like the old fashioned way of it and her constant ways of being in this world. This is a wonderful thing to do. My mom sends hundreds of cards a year, doing much the same thing you do, just letting people know that someone is thinking of them. It’s a beautiful thing to be there to offer encouragement to someone who can use it. xxx
