Adventures in Shopping

Fred and I just got back from the grocery store. We went there mainly to get refunds on drink cans and plastic bottles, but, you know how it is–there is always something you can get while you are there and I knew there were two things on the list I keep on the refrigerator. The top one was bread flour because I made raisin bread this morning and that almost emptied the flour canister. I also told Fred I needed crisp apples although I knew that wasn’t the second thing on the list!

Anyway, we managed to accumulate enough groceries to fill four plastic bags.  One of the bags was full of bread and hamburger buns on sale, and another had sausages and meat, both picked out by Fred, and thus, of course, both on sale. I used our household debit card and after the initial confusion when it was refused for wrong pin number, I suddenly realized that, yes, I WAS putting in the wrong pin number!   I was putting in my personal account number!  After that was corrected, the total came up to be $90 and some change.

Ummm, I don’t think so! Four bags — two of which were full of sale items –and a bill of almost $100? I think not!

So, I pointed this out to the checker and she printed out the receipt. Then we saw that some meat which was on sale for around $8 had been rung up for some strange reason as over $70! She apologetically told me that I would have to go to the service desk to get a refund and went over with me where she snagged a young man. He pressed lots of buttons and told me they couldn’t give me a credit on this card since the card was a debit card! He said, "I can only give you a cash refund!" Ok, I had no problem with this and so he gave me $62 and some change. I put the money in my purse, and when we got home, transferred the same amount from my personal account to our household account! {I think I may have mentioned before how much I on-line banking, right?}

Oh, and on the way out, I saw the particular kitchen-paper roll that was the second thing on my list! We did NOT go back for it!

Until later….

Wow….that was some expensive meat! I can’t use my atm card cuz I can’t remember the pin number and every time I get a new one, I lose it. *insert eye-roll* hugs, Weesprite

I think it’s great that you’re organized enough to have separate accounts for household and personal. Of course, at the moment, I’m the whole household so…. but still… a good way to budget and keep track of expenses, etc. That’s odd though, I have received credits against my debit card several times, in fact, it happened just today!

I love on-line banking, too! I sure do hate cashier mix-ups, though. The girl at Sam’s the other day somehow managed to put my purchase on my Discover card (also my Sam’s membership card) instead of my debit card. I could have strangled her.

🙂 I love crisp apples. 🙂

A mistake of more than 70$??! Ouch! I wonder how many other customers were walloped with that one.

To save, tis best to shop alone, but a partner can help carry all the bags. Glad you double check those receipts.

RYN: I just caught a glance of the photo of you on your front page. GREAT photo! heh, for 70$ that steak had better be Kobe beef…

I know groceries are expensive, but they’re not THAT expensive! Glad you noticed the error before you went home because they’d quibble for an hour before they gave it back to you later… we spent a hundred bucks on groceries on sunday, but it was about 12 bags full and it took me three trips to carry them all upstairs! (huggles)
