Unconnected Thoughts

I have to read The English Patient before next Tuesday when the book club meets. I just can’t get into it. Perhaps if I didn’t read at night when I am sleepy I would do better?

I was up at 4 this morning. I almost wrote 4 am this morning—that would be, of course,  to distinguish it from the 4 am this afternoon, perhaps? I first heard this particular redundancy when I lived in the South and I thought it was peculiar to that region, but to my surprise and amusement, my English nephew says it too.

As soon as it is light out there, I am going for a walk, and it may well be the only walk of the day since the weather forecast promises a scorcher. I walked down hill to the post office yesterday afternoon and that was a lovely walk. If there had been any other way of getting home besides walking uphill to get there, I would have taken it!

Today I WILL tackle at least one of these paper piles I have around here. I need to think of a reward for myself. I detest cleaning up paper piles even when I know two-thirds of them will go straight to the recycling bag. Which reminds me, I have lots of notes on how the English are recycling these days and I intend to write an entry about it. I am very impressed!

Until later…

Number of Steps on the pedometer for yesterday: 6316 This was one fast walk in the morning and s slow meander to the post office in the afternoon…

i guess right at daylight is the best time to walk these days. merlyn and i haven’t been on a walk in a while. i’m curtailing walks til it’s a bit cooler in the mornings. brutal is the word i’ve heard used with the heat and humidity that is coming for today and tomorrow. i’m staying inside. take care,

Hi, I just found your diary. I am very sorry about the loss of your sister, i can’t imagine how you must feel. I use a pedometer as well, though your total steps are much higher than mine. I usually manage 10000 once or twice a week and then around 5000 the rest of the time.

You did better on the steps today. I heard the English Patient movie was boring… don’t know if I would even attempt the book.

In Buffalo everyone puts the word “The” in front of the interstate numbers. “….get on THE 190 to THE 290….” intead of “take 190 until you reach interstate 290…”… Bugs the shit out of me! LOL!

I couldn’t get into The English Patient either. I did read it eventually after I saw the movie. It feels like too much work to read books like that now.

Cleaning up piles of paper – yuck!

Do you know what’s funny – I could never get into The English Patient either! I’ve tried starting it a couple of times and it just leaves me cold. As far as Ondaatje goes I much preferred In The Skin of A Lion – which doesn’t really help you for your book club meeting! I hope you had a good walk at 4 a.m. this morning. 😉

I hate paper piles, too! I think they multiply overnight.

“The English Patient” is definitely not a passive read…you can’t just rush into it.

I loved that movie, although it was a little slow at times. I don’t think I would tackle the book…and I’m a big reader. Good luck! Being a book club must be a lot of fun.

Just last month I made my final attempt at reading The English Patient. I didn’t enjoy the movie, but such a fuss was made over it, I thought I was missing something that perhaps I would find in the book. The book been sitting on my shelf for five or six years and I’ve given given it a go perhaps four times. This time I struggled through 20-some pages before discarding it to the give-away box.

Cheat! Watch the movie! Seems like I read it a long time ago (when the movie came out) and it was a slow read, hard to understand, even tho I’d seen the movie.
