Retail Therapy

Today was my designated retail therapy day. I seldom shop since Fred buys all the groceries  so once in a while I like to get out mostly for a look around. I had a short list–door stoppers, kitchen oven mitts, small bowls which have been the subject of an ongoing search for some considerable time, and a sugar bowl to replace the one I broke.

I went first to Home Depot, asked, and was escorted right up to the place where there were several different kinds and colors of wedge-shaped door stoppers. I bought two brown ones exactly the same as the ones I was replacing although I bet when Fred bought them many years ago, they were considerably less that $2.20 I paid for each of them.

Next, I walked over to Walmart {one big parking lot away} to look for sugar bowls and small bowls. I’m thinking “supersize this” has struck the manufacterers of dishes, too. I want small bowls –the kind that hold a cup of oatmeal and make it look like a lot more!  We have four of these bowls but a couple of them are chipped and not only do they not look good, all sorts of nasty germs move into chips and cracks. Now, there are lots of bowls out there, but either they are too big or they have an aggressively cheery pattern I know I couldn’t stand for long. I don’t care if my dishes don’t match but since the ones we have are either green-patterned  or have a green rim I don’t want something that screams, “I am different! and I don’t belong!” I want my dishes to get along, ok? And as for sugar bowls, well, there were only two and I hated both of them. I guess this will go on the mental list of things I look for everytime I go out. But I did get two cheerful oven mitts.

When I went out, I had a senior moment when I could not remember where I had parked my car, but at last I realized it was the other side of this parking lot and walked over and found it. I then started home but on the way back remembered I wanted to look at The Christmas Store. I had seen their adverts on TV where perky people told the cameras that the bargains in the flyers had brought them in but just look at all the bargains on the shelves! So, I drove over to the area where they were and parked my car right by Best Buy which was a short walk from the store I wanted to visit. This is part of my usual pattern of parking a distance from the store I am going to and walking to it. It is quite a nice store—reasonably priced stuff for the home, mostly and it was full of women like me walking around looking and not putting anything into their carts.

I returned to my car and then noticed where I was parked. Right by Best Buy, the place where I had bought my original iPod. So, I went in to look, just to look, at the iPod Shuffles. And once I saw the cuteness of them, I was hooked. I bought a 512 mg one—and, yes, it is true–it is the size of a pack of gum! I haven’t loaded it up yet but I anticipate no trouble with it since I already have the I-Tunes program on my laptop. I will be interested to see if the battery really does run for 12 hours. When I bought my 2nd generation iPod, the battery was supposed to run for 8 hours. I tested it and it ran for 8 hrs and 15 minutes so I am sure the Shuffle will do as well. More info on the Shuffle when I have it set up.

Until later..

I’m 24 and I have trouble remembering where I parked my car…

April 26, 2005

I am leaving this note before I finish the entry and forget – I bought small bowls of the kind you mention at IKEA. I just tried to find them on the website but I can’t seem to, maybe they are too small to list? I have them in white, blue, and yellow. My mom has some spring green ones too. Maybe because they are a European company they have smaller stuff?

I always park in the back of the lot so that I am closer to the exit. I can’t wait to hear how the new ipod is. Have a great day!

Oh ho, you and I are so alike, we love the gadgets! I bought my iPod Mini the same way – just going into Best Buy! Of course, it was pink, and I just couldn’t pass that up. Parking farther away from the store is a good idea, I may just have to start implementing that one myself. I look forward to hearing how the shuffle works out for you!

I too frequently must hit the alarm button on my car in order to find it. I know it is rude but I’ve walked for miles and can’t find my vehicle, I think I need a nice cheery looking flag to put on the antennae (sp?) so I can spot it without frightening innocent people walking past my vehicle… have a good day eh,

I found something called “rice bowls”.. you can get them in Chinatowns everywhere… and I got some at Crate and Barrel, too. Maybe Target? (I’m not sure where you live, so I can’t really recommend sources, but I try anyway!)

YOu must be really up to date. I don’t even know what a ipod or ipod shuffler are? Are they similar to a mp3 player? I have to find out from my kids what is hip and what isn’t. Isn’t that terrible?

April 26, 2005

Oh, now I want to see the shuffle! My Rio MP3 player is a lot bigger than a pack of gum.

i’m still carrying a portable cd player when i walk. wish i could afford an ipod or mp3 player. one of these days!!! take care,

I have to match too, one of my ocd’s. *huggs*

My son got an I-Pod for his birthday and really likes it; his two year old cousin got one as well … she enjoyed eating the headphones.

Question: I can’t find your recent entry in which you mentioned the grammar rule for when and where to double the consonants depending on which syllable the accent is on. What was that again? I don’t ever remember coming across it before, and just somehow “know” how to spell most words. I was telling my son about it, and now it has disappeared.

yes, its really small and so compact. Amazing. You should check out Big Lots or Ross if you have them there for bowls. They have all sorts of sizes and very very cheap, but good looking 🙂

My Grammy called little bowls “bowlies.” As I was reading I was saying, “oh, you mean bowlies!.” I knew exactly what you were looking for! I knew the minute you mentioned the Shuffle that it was only a matter of time.

Patricia, do you remember when plastic balls were the rage to stick on the car’s antenna, usuall round, and of different colors… what happened? was it that all cars has a ball on the antenna even if different colors… there are just so many colors I guess.

April 26, 2005

Patricia, would you please put a note in your records for checking if my Timex battery really lasts ten years as it claims?

I love this entry – almost like getting a day out, myself. I found small bowls at Meijer. They are by Corelle and are plain white, which go with my white dishes with ivy trim. And they will go with any other set, as well.

Woo-hoo! You got your Ipod!

I am so impressed with all your gadgets. You teach me about all the latest stuff. Now if they could tell us just where we left our car. lol

I got 4 small small bowls today at the Goodwill for 1.95.. I figure I will put my brown rice or pasta in them to try to get a handle on portion sizes.. also I want my kids to eat ice cream or pudding out of them. They probably don’t hold more than 4 oz.
