Reading on Thursday

Today I went up to the school to read with my fourth-grader, Nick. I have no idea what his mother packed him for lunch because he didn’t even open his lunch box to look. And he kept rushing me to get through my lunch so we could go and read.

While we were walking to the auditorium he told me we were going to read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe  for 15 minutes with me reading then he was going to read to me from the Pokemon book he had got at the book fair and then the last 15 minutes were for the puzzles and games sheets that are put into my folder  every week. {I like a man with a plan even if he is only ten years old! } Martha, the woman in charge, had a sheet with different kinds of simple poem types and gave us a couple of sheets of paper and told us that April was poetry-writing month! So, we followed Nick’s plan. {I now know more about Pokemons than I ever did!}

The poetry-writing was fun. We particularly enjoyed acrostic poems. This is where you write a noun vertically down the page and then use each letter as the first letter of each line in a poem about whatever noun you choose.  Since Martha is going to put the poems in a little booklet, she asked us to sign each poem as to who wrote it. She said that she could use the ones that Nick wrote and the ones we wrote together but, obviously, not the ones I wrote. When she came to tell us that it was 5 minutes to one, we were both laughing. I was writing and Nick was telling me what to write.

I said, “Give me a word.”

He said, “Hi.” so I wrote that vertically down the page. Then he said, “Write ‘Hello, India!'” What was making us laugh so much was when he said, ” Then put ‘written by Nick who didn’t think this through enough.'”  When I was talking to Martha after I had walked with Nick back to his classroom, she told me that if we both wanted to, I could have the same child next year when he will be in the fifth grade. I would really enjoy that and I think Nick would too.

I was exhausted when I got home so went for a 45 minute nap which helped a lot. I made a 2 pound loaf of white bread today and had every intention of making another one but of brown bread but somehow, the day got away from me. I will do that first thing tomorrow.

Tomorrow I have an art class {oil pastels this week} from 1 to 3 and then an hour tutoring Robin at 4 pm until 5.

Now I am off to watch my Netflix movie–Prime Suspect–the third season.

Until later…

That’s a neat poem idea. Think I will give it a try just for fun. Actually I did write C H A I R and came up with C climb H high A and I insert R rump. But I realize this is not the how it is to be done and should be an actual poem.

I think you will enjoy Nick as much as he enjoys you next year. Sounds like you are having a great time.

He sounds like a little charmer 🙂

Awww, what a cute kid. He sounds like a fun little guy. 🙂

I didn’t know kids were still into Pokemon. I know there are a lot of new Pokemon since my kids were interested.

You’re way more active than I am. You’re totally my role model … which means I need to get more socially involved. I’m a hermit.

How sweet. I would love for my son to have a tutor like you…very patient 🙂

April 14, 2005

Sounds like you and Nick are good for each other. 🙂

April 14, 2005

You have the most wonderful life – thank you for sharing it with us.

April 14, 2005

hehehe, I have my loaf in right now. I am waaaay ahead of you now! 🙂 And it sounds so wonderful what you do. Reading with Nick. I wish I could teach… but have no idea where to do this and how to teach it.

Nick sounds like a pretty neat kid. Please tell me how the oil pastels go, I’ve always been interested in pastels, but never had the nerve to try them.

He sounds like a great kid. 10 is such a great age. I missed my oldest nephew going through that stage because I left Canada when he was 9 and now he’s 14! It sounds like you are much happier tutoring than you were working in the library. As a retired teacher I guess you would find it more rewarding to tutor where you can please yourself and focus your attention and experience on one person.

Nick sounds like a great kid and it’s good you two get along so well.

April 15, 2005

April 15, 2005

April must be National Poetry Month, as it’s poetry month at Skip’s school, too. 🙂 Nick sounds like a hoot!

I used to love writing these poems when I was in a Writer’s Circle but had no idea that’s what they were called! You sound like you’ve built up a great relationship with Nick – it’s brilliant he’s getting so much enjoyment out of your tutoring.
