Monday
It feels really strange not to be doing laundry on a Monday morning. My landlords have been away and so I did the laundry while they were gone.
Can I say now that I really really {heart} AAA? I bought a membership last year and, if I am remembering correctly, it cost about $45 per year and I have it automatically renewed. Yesterday I went out to start my car to go for a massage and heard only the dreaded “dlick! click!” of a dead battery. Fred took me to and brought me from the massage and he was going to jumpstart my car this morning when I suddenly realized I have a Triple A membership. So, I called the toll-free number and explained the problem. I was given a time window of about and hour and a half and well within the time window, up drove a cheery man who restarted my car instantly! I don’t drive very much {and therein lies part of the battery problem} but when I want to go, I want my car to be ready.
Hey! The line is back! Whee!
Anyway, this morning I got a frantic call from Robin, the college student I am tutoring and she desperately needs my help, she said. Usually I go on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and I am paid for this by the Community College she attends, but this morning Robin offered to pay me herself. I told her that at this point it wasn’t necessary because I have been gone two weeks and have those sessions “in reserve” so to speak ,so I am off to her apartment this afternoon at 3 pm for at least an hour. She really wants to succeed but she has fallen behind a lot. First, she was sick and then just as she was feeling better and went back to classes, her language tutor {me} popped off to the not-so-sunny South for two weeks!
It is raining. I have not yet been for a walk. I may do that after I have finished here or, and this is much more likely, I may pop in a DVD and watch LOTR while walking on the manual treadmill. Apropos of the word “treadmill”, I notice that these days I almost always misspell it the first time I type and and have to insert the letter “e” which my brain knows belongs in there but my fingers refuse to put in.
This particular word was one I “lost” during the first stages of menopause. A reason where I needed the word didn’t come up in conversation all that much, but when it did, there was a blank in my mind where it should have been so I usually said, “Y’know! The exercise machine one walks on!” I found the losing of formerly well-known words to be disconcerting at first, but a bit of reading {and a comment or two from colleagues the same age} reassured me that this was relatively normal and that most of the words would come back. And, of course, English is a language rich in synonyms so I managed not to panic over this.
Until later…
I promise you this is a true story. A college friend had a romance with a young man in London. They wrote letters rather frequently (imagine writing…longhand!). In one of the letters he was trying to use the cliche “absence makes the heart grow fonder”. He wrote “hart”, crossed it out, tried “haert” and crossed that out as well. There was a third spelling error, but he corrected the

whole mess by crossing out his third misspelling and wrote instead, “cardiovascular pump”. Spelled properly.

i have never heard about forgetting words like that, then them returning at a later date in life. We live and learn.

Wow, I didn’t know tutors got 911 calls. 🙂

This makes me feel better over my own frequent word lapses.

there is something strange going on with brains once they hit a certain age I think. I constantly seem to be typing words with all the correct letters in but all in wrong sequence: eg: ezyrssacn rather than crazyness !! I do it alot!! Maybe we can blame the keyboard!! lol huggles

Am I going to lose some words too when I go into menopause in a few weeks? I hope not! And its pretty cool that you tutor!

Just two weeks ago, my boyfriend I got AAA Plus. Since we work far away from the apartment, AAA Plus covers 100 mile tows. AAA is a Godsend.

Take heart. There are a few words that no matter how often I read them, I continually misspell, no matter how hard I try to keep them correct. Personally, I think you do pretty good.

I remember forgetting the word “towel” when I was about 9.

Thee change I have noticed most, of late, is the one where we must actively think about what was being said. My conversations used to be multitaking wonders and I find now that I actually have to think and form answers to what is being said. Having said that, I still want to learn Algebra. Especially now that I understand quantum mechanics. How’s that for a laugh?

It’s good that you have that AAA. Kind of makes it worth the money .

RYN: Not sure what causes the bumps but it is very common. I am glad she only has the two at the time. The other one he could get rid of. She is feeling much better now and I think she will come thru the surgery well. She is in very good shape and has alot of energy. I will keep you posted.

I, also, owe AAA my life. Your note made me laugh out loud.

I have noticed that I also lose nouns that I used to know. It is so frustrating!!!! I have however gotten very good at describing things. lol

Gracious I didn’t know that was a symptom of the menopause – I have that to look forward to? Gulp!
