The Rest of Monday

Well, on the whole, this day went well. I walked as I said I would for 30 minutes after I put the last load in the dryer but also at about 10 to 5.  I got the idea to check the little desk-top program I have that tells me when the sun sets. It didn’t set until 20 minutes after 5 so I threw my coat on, plugged the IPod into my ears, put my cell phone in my pocket, put on my orange vest and my gloves and set out for a 20 minute walk and it was exhilarating. There is one road I walk where the traffic was pretty busy but I walked facing the traffic and all went well.

Fred fixed supper this evening and he made corned-beef hash with an egg cooked on the top. I ate a lot of corned beef and spam when I was a kid during World War II and quite like it with lots of ketchup. I did have half the plate filled with salad so at least half was nutritious! Good job I am not counting calories this week since I have have eaten one of those tiny sample boxes of Valentine chocolate. Fred’s daughter sent us a Valentine package which she doesn’t usually do and in there were {among other things} were two tiny boxes of chocolate! The best thing about Valentine’s Day is that chocolate goes on sale the next day!

Tomorrow I have to tutor Robin again at one o’clock. This means she needs extra practice on recognizing adverbs and adjectives in sentences since she has a test on this either Wednesday or Thursday. So, I must make her a couple of worksheets and something to study. I will do that in the morning. I am NOT an evening person.

Back in the days when I taught seventh grade, I would get up at 4 am so I could do what required doing for school. Before I got my kid up at 6 am I would type tests, study-guides, etc, grade essays and put grades into my computer program. I got to school at about 7:15 am and if I was on duty, I had to be outside or in the lunchroom for breakfast duty by 7:25. A bell rang at 7:40 and the first class began at 7:50. At 2:50 my kids came back to my room and buses started arriving at 3. The buses were usually off the premises by 3:15 and we had to stay until 3:30. I didn’t even tidy my desk because I was through for the day. All that organizing stuff got done in the morning…

IPoddery:

  • “Jolly Fellows that Follow the Plough” sung by Magpie Lane
  • “Deep Blue Sea” sung by Sweet Honey in the Rock. {I love a cappella music}
  • “Lady Diamond” sung by Steeleye Span.
  • “Let It Be Me” sung by the Everly Brothers {Very easy to harmonize to}
  • “Prison Trilogy” sung by Joan Baez. {This song has a line “And we’ll raze, raze the prisons to the ground” and several of my seventh graders were confused and asked me what the line meant because they confused “raze” with “raise.” We had a similar confusion with a Leonard Cohen song called “Joan of Arc” because he used the word “heroine” {which, of course, means female hero} and they didn’t know the word and thought it was referring to the drug. }
  • “I’m Your Man” written by Leonard Cohen and sung by someone who has put it to a jazzy beat. it is not at all like Cohen’s version but quite nice. Wow! I just looked on the IPod and it is Elton John!

Until later…

You have such diverse taste in music. You’ve given me a few good ideas–exposed me to a few artists I might not have chosen, but like them. 🙂

The first time I heard him sing Joan of Arc I almost couldn’t breathe. What a powerful song that is! Of course, most of his songs are that powerful — he’s an incredible songwriter!

Liked hearing your teacher schedule – so full of life.

Isn’t there a name for the egg cooked on top of the hash….toad in the hole? or am I thinking of something else?

February 14, 2005

I haven’t had corned beef in ages, I like that stuff. 🙂

Lady Diamond! Isn’t that a heartbreaker of a ballad?

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Sad that they thought Heroine was a drug, not the female counterpart of a hero.
