Objects: Part One
I got this idea from Icklewriter who has to put together 10 objects to take with her {on a course }that represent her as she sees herself.
This is nowhere near as easy as it sounds. Here begins my list:
- My IPod. This is the object that represents and provides a lot of the incentive to get me out to walk. I enjoy the physical act of walking but I also love my IPod’s choice of the music on there. When I first started using it, I played music from the “Walk” playlist but these days I take pleasure in seeing what the shuffle command brings up. {This morning I started out with the 1812 Overture and finished with Donovan singing “Jennifer Juniper.”}
- A pair of earrings. These represent the fact that I know I can easily slip back into depression and I have to make a daily effort to reach some standards that help to keep me out of that Deep Pit. Part of the effort I make is to get fully dressed every morning when I get up. In order to be sure I am not slopping around in old smelly sweats {as I was during the worst of the depressive period} I put a different pair of earrings out every night to match the sweater and jeans I am going to wear. {I put my clothes in the living room before I go to bed and dress there each morning so as not to wake Fred who is NOT a morning person!}
- My laptop. This object represents the ability to be able to connect via IM with my sons in Mississippi and my sister in England. And it also stands for the fact that much to my surprise, in a sort of girly way, I am computer geekish !
- The big hand-made English teddy bear {who has a red, white and blue ribbon around his neck} which is now sitting on top of the television in the bedroom. This was my younger son’s teddy, the one he carried with him every time he went for a visit to his father when he was little. It is not only a link to him, but to my sister in England who made it for him. When I moved to Vermont, I asked him if I could borrow Ted for a while. This was getting-on six years ago. {Some day, Ted will make it back; I really am only borrowing him.}
More later..
My iPod turned itself on spontaneously last night and started playing Bruce Springsteen’s song about September 11.

Well, this sounds like an interesting experiment in introspection. I’m interested in hearing the rest.

This is a nest idea, Patrisha! But hard, I expect. I’ll be looking forward to the rest of your ten objects. That’s a good idea, laying out your earrings…. I might do this one today too (it being a day off and all). Wishing you another wonderful day! hugs, Weesprite

How sweet about the teddy bear. I think young children are close to their moms. That is an interesting list. I can get depressed, but I take something and it helps. I have tried going off but I can’t. I hope you have a wonderful day!

This was most fascinating and no, it doesn’t sound easy. I’m not sure I could do it.

ryn: thanks for the suggestion about the circle….I saw it once but didn’t know if I could join or not. Interesting concept of coming up with 10 objects to keep with you. I know I’d have to think very hard on this one. While I worked on building my house, I never failed to wear earrings because I felt I could at least look feminine that way when I was covered in dust or sweat.

fascinating! i wonder what the next part of this list holds.

I never wanted an iPod before, but you’re making it sound better & better. And I’m also thinking that if I don’t have one, I’ll be relegated to the old fogey ranks. Maybe I’d better start paying attention & get this figured out!
