Later on Saturday: EDITED

I am SO annoyed with myself! I tracked down a bread recipe that was almost the same as my favorite one but for a 2 pound loaf. I tossed all the ingredients into the bread machine and set it going. There was about an hour to go when I suddenly realize that I forgot to set it for a 2 pound loaf which means it may not be fully cooked! Usually I do not touch the size button since the default is 1.5 pounds and that is the size I usually make. Well, I am not beating myself up over it. If I have to throw it out, it is something the birds will enjoy. What I am going to do is to leave the bread machine on after it beep and let it go through the “warm” cycle. I think that is 30 minutes and maybe that will be enough to cook it fully. If it was easy to get out of the pan, the best thing to do would be to put it into the oven to finish, but when the bread is hot, the only way to get it out is to tear a hole in the bottom when getting it out and the paddle doesn’t want to let go of the hot bread!

EDIT: Much to my surprise, the bread turned out well. I left it in the breadmaker for 30 minutes on the “warm” cycle and the only problem, a very small one, was that the bread did not rise completely. Flat-topped bread tastes as good as round-topped bread!

Since Fred had been ill and I have stopped working, I have been using the bread maker more than I usually did. When he first came home from hospital, I really had to tempt his appetite. Now, of course, we don’t have this problem but we really like the basic white bread as toast and I am making a loaf every second or third day.

Although I do not feel ill, I believe I am battling a cold. I am sneezing and have a runny nose and feel stuffed up. I already had some of those drying-up pills that one takes every four hours but when I was up at the drug store getting Fred’s insulin, I got some of the take-one-every-12-hours pills which is what I prefer. I will let this four hour one wear off and then take a 12 hour one tonight before I go to bed, and, if it is necessary, another one in the morning.

I so seldom have a cold, it took me quite a while to realize that this constant sniffling was not my usual I-am-allergic-to-morning problems. Generally when I get up, I have two or three large sneezes and a couple of tissues-worth of nose-blowing to get through. After that is over, I am fine for the day. But this is different in that it is not only in the morning and I have been sneezing all day, on and off. Anyway, when I was teaching and a single mother, I had to save my sick leave for days when my kid was sick so I just couldn’t afford to give in to a mere cold! I have gone to school many times after taking a 12 hour pill and made it sucessfully through the day.

So far today I have finished off one box of tissues and opened a second one…

Until later…

This may be too late, but can you pick out the entire tub from the bread maker when it beeps, and put the whole thing in the oven? If it’s hearty enough to be heated in the bread maker, perhaps the entire thing (forget about taking the loaf out and ripping it on the paddle) could be fully cooked in the regular oven…

I hope the bread turns out! Though that is a good outlook…. that the birds will enjoy it if you and Fred can’t. Also I hope your cold is soon over with. I can’t “afford” to take off work, because we’re always short-handed as it is. So I start gargling and taking Dimetapp at the first sign of any “might be a cold.” It usually keeps me cold-free but not always! Wishing you a lovely evening! hugs,

Yup, sounds like a cold to me. I hope it stays at a manageable level for you.

January 22, 2005

Hope you don’t have that flu going around. After the stress lately it doesn’t surprise me your immune system is off-track. Lots of hot tea!

January 22, 2005

yes, that sounds like it might be a cold, take care and drink plenty of orange juice. 🙂

Me too — battling a cold and losing ground rapidly. Ugh! Let’s both get better soon!

So sorry to hear you have a cold. They are no fun at all. I feel for you. Am overdue for one myself. Ugh.

Working on your second box of tissue in one day sounds like a doozy of a cold! I agree, when bread doesn’t rise, it still tastes yummy, especially toasted.

glad the bread turned out okay. I hope the cold goes away fast.

So glad the bread turned out. Seems like my book has instructions for how to finish baking it in a real oven if the power goes out or something. I can’t remember what it said to do. You would think that the whole pan would just pop into the oven.

I am so glad that your bread turned out, and I’m so sorry that you are not feeling well. Drink plenty of fluids, and get plenty of rest, oh, and some chicken soup couldn’t hurt either. Take care, and feel better soon.

Take care of yourself, stay warm.

January 22, 2005

It’s very hard to mess up bread.

January 22, 2005

oh no! I hope that the tissue has lotion in it…. so your nose won’t get raw. That’s my main problem with colds. I do hope you’ll get over it quickly! And thanks for the comment for Grace. She is a beauty, very very timid though.

uh… you just changed your colors!

In my girl-Scout-Leader days, I would go to winter camp with a terrible cold, and come home well. always though that I froze the germs. Maybe your walk will do the same for you. Take care.
