My Bag of Lunch
I feel so unfocused this morning. Sometimes I know exactly what I want to write about and sometimes I am , as I am this morning, fuzzy-brained. Of course, I know where this feeling is coming from. I didn’t get much sleep last night.
So, in lieu for something better {there are several “something betters” marinating in my mind} I am going to tell you the saga of My Bag of Lunch.
I got to the library at 9:30 as usual. Because it was so hot yesterday and because the library is air conditioned and our apartment {except for the bedroom} isnt, I carried my lunch instead of walking home as I usually do. I had a bagel, cheese, two leaves of romaine lettuce and a handful of those cute little grape tomatoes that we like so much we have a box out to nibble on all the time they are in season. I went to the children’s section downstair {it is ALWAYS cool there} and put my brown bag in the refrigerator. There was another brown bag there also but plenty of room for mine.
The day went well. We had patrons and lots and LOTS of children. it bothers me a little that we seem to have become unofficial baby-sitters for a small group of boys. Their parents drop them off at the library for a couple of hours and then pick them up after lunch. We serve free lunches followed by a period of “crafts” {I use the term loosely because I was once an art teacher and what they do are NOT crafts…but I digress} or a story-telling time. So, eventually, I went to get my lunch at about 1 pm. I like to eat lunch late because the afternoon is shorter. Lunch for the children was over and they were cleaning up after the crafts so I decided to sit upstairs to eat.
I opened my brown paper bag and in there were three additional packets of celery sticks and three fat black plums, none of which *I* had put there. I gazed at them in amazement. I have had food disappear from a lunch bag before, but have never been given food! Well, eventually I found out that these had been left from the the children’s lunches and my boss had put them in what she thought was her brown bag in the refrigerator. There was a lot of laughter over this and I got to keep one packet of celery sticks and two plums.
One of the many things I like about this job is that we DO laugh a lot over things that seem quite trivial but are amusing.
Now, time to chase the cobwebs from my head with coffee and the newspaper…
