Writing about Writing
I have been doing the random search thing through other people’s diaries and I am struck by how many teens there are.
I used to teach writing to sixth and seventh graders and I remember how they used to ask for more time to write in the classroom journals when I promised them that I wouldn’t read them unless they asked me too. If they wanted me to read something, they put the journal on my desk with the pages they didn’t want me to read clipped together.
The really interesting part of this was that in the beginning, I had hardly any journals left on my desk. By the time we got about halfway through the year, about a third of the class were regularly leaving their journals two or three times a week.
Everyone wants to be read, I think. It is just that some of us are braver about it than others
I have never had a teacher who encouraged us to write in journals let alone make it part of the curriculum. I would have loved that. I’m not a writer..but I like to write sometimes.
