Bits and Pieces

I have to say I’m not loving Google’s Olympics doodles.  Today’s one looks like Pinocchio’s having a shot at the javelin event ……

Another Singing Kettle (children’s show) expedition the other weekend – all the family kids there this time so that was nice.  I had planned to get tickets for Reece for his fifth birthday and luckily, my niece Jenny knew I was doing that – she’d got tickets through her work so told me where her seats were and I was able to get 4 tickets for 3 rows behind them.

I only needed 3 but when you book online it sometimes doesn’t let you buy seats if it means leaving 2 or 3 seats in that particular row – especially if it’s in a popular area – presumably something to do with what will sell.  Anyway I decided just to get 4 and Reece could take a friend with him but turned out his stepsister, Paige, was down from Orkney for the weekend so she was able to come with us which was great.

A couple of times in the show the Singing Kettle entourage gives the kids a chance to be picked to go up on the stage where they get dressed up in costumes and do a song with them.  In the first half Reece got picked so he was well chuffed!  Paige was a star – disappointed at first but then waving madly to him all the time he was up on stage.  I told her she might get a chance in the second half but unfortunately she wasn’t picked then either and, just to add salt to the wound, it was all too much for one wee boy so they needed a replacement.  I thought her arm was going to shoot through the ceiling she stuck it up so high but she was just pipped to the post by a wee girl in front of us.  The halo slipped slightly but the promise of birthday cake at Pizza Express afterwards sorted that out.

Poor soul – I felt for her – these things matter when you’re 6.

And Rosie managed to stay awake throughout I’m happy to report!

She was absolutely fascinated with the flowers in this outdoor display – stood for ages feeling the velvety petals and running the earth through her fingers.

In Pizza Express afterwards Lorna and I tried to hear each other over the babble of 8 adults and 6 kids ranging in age from 10 months to 6 years old whilst Nikki sat in horror realising she was about to add a seventh child to this melee!

Our microwave went kaput the other day.  To be fair it had been giving us warnings in the form of occasional sparks and flashes which I had studiously ignored so it probably realised it was going to have to do something spectacular for me to sit up and take notice which it duly did on Saturday.  I sighed.  A whole evening gone while I researched reviews online, chose a model then searched for the best price and looked to see if I could get cashback on it.

What a pain.

I happened to be in Dunelm Mill that afternoon looking for one of these cool floral long-handled brushes when I spied a bright red microwave for £49.99 staring at me, just willing me to buy it.  I thought what the hell, flexed my muscles and lugged it up to the till.

Home – out of box – plugged in – raring to go 30 seconds later.

This was what it was like in the old days.  You needed something – went to a shop – picked out the colour you fancied and bought it.  Life was a much simpler affair.

Must admit couldn’t resist checking out online later though to see if I’d done myself out of any money but it appears to be a range specific to Dunelm Mill so I wouldn’t have got it cheaper anywhere else although I did myself out of £1.99 cashback by not buying it through a cashback site.  However I’ve just banked 50 quid from Topcashback gained in the last few months through doing just that – buying stuff online through their site so technically I got a free microwave!

And I got a letter back from Mum!

Not straight away admittedly – she phoned the following week instead and then we were up seeing her the weekend after that but her conscience must have been pricking away because 5 pages landed on the mat on Wednesday morning!  Small pages but pages nevertheless.  I wrote another missive back and this time included some diary entries from a diary of Dad’s for 1962 – luckily he didn’t get time to write much otherwise I’d have been there at the copier for ever (I told her I would copy everything so that she doesn’t have to worry about losing anything)!&nbsp&nbspAlso copied in a photo as well because I feel it’s a shame she misses out on all the family photos constantly getting posted up on Facebook.  She phoned last night to give me an update on my sister-in-law who’s in hospital just now so she was delighted to hear there was another letter coming in the morning (although probably secretly cursing me for writing back so quickly!)

Worked out I spent the same number of hours writing last week as I did working (21 hours).  It’s good to see this dent (developed in my shorthand days) reappearing in my finger again …..

Log in to write a note

yeah, I am often in the positon of downloading photos from facebook etc becuase nobody thinks to print them & send to our joint mother these days. I feel as if I’m some sort of transitinal generation.

I love those shows with children and always feel disappointed for them. I am so glad you all had a neat time though. hugs

Impressive dent. Even more impressive output. / What do you know, your Mom did write back. Great idea to include the family photos she missed. You’re a good Kid, do you realize that? / Comical about Nikki in the corner pondering… Is she due in September? Any more ultrasounds? / Keep writing!!

Rosie seems destined to become a master gardener.

Love your pics as always. Know what you mean about disappointments at 6 (not being chosen when you just KNOW you are the best! – Poppet is the same!). Getting letters is fun – more so when it comes from a parent. I found on your last pic I kept focusing on your handwriting – nice writing. That is some dent on the finger though. Thanks for your notes. Best wishes, A

Ah the wonders of that vintage piece of communication equipment – the pen! Love the handwriting

Singing Kettle have been going so long now. My children saw them when they were little!

Imagine still having all those letters to enjoy! How blessed you are! I love the picture of the little girl standing mesmerized at the flower pot and feeling the soil and everything. That’s is so very sweet. It actually made my day!

It is interesting to see you write in longhand, and with not so many emendations – you must think clearly before you write

Since I got my first computer 10 years ago my handwriting has steadily declined. Yours looks rather good. 🙂

Pinocchio up there looks like he has a black badminton birdie glued to his armpit. I don’t think that’s regulation.

I’m really enjoying the Olympic doodles 🙂 ryn: yes of course! Sorry for the late reply as I haven’t been on OD these past couple of days xxx

Good old Dunelm Mill, I love that shop! they have so many lovely things. Mac introduced me to it when visiting Crewe a couple of years ago. Think he wishes he hadn’t now.

I love that your mom wrote back — and that you’re sending her diary entries from your dad and photos. I often feel bad that I don’t print out photos anymore and my dad and MIL don’t often see the digital ones. Oddly I’ve just spent ages sending a print order to Walgreen’s of my MIL’s house and gardens, because she asked Baker B for some pictures when he was there over the weekend. I really need to print some things out for my dad too. Our microwave did the exact same thing a couple of years ago, and I had a hard time finding a new one. I found ONE, including online choices, but happily it was a local store and not very expensive. And has done well since we bought it. Red is a very nice option! We ended up with stainless steel, which I like but starts looking very grungy VERY fast. Poor little kids! It does sound like a fun time, though. And yay for dents in fingers-

August 7, 2012

Just googled Dunelm Mill out of curiosity — what fun colors they have for microwaves!!! We had white. Black. Stainless Steel. That was IT. Boooring!

August 8, 2012

a red microwave sounds really different to me. don’t think i’ve ever seen one. white, black and stainless steel, mine being black to match the other appliances. i have a similar indentation from wearing glasses on the side of my nose. it doesn’t quite have the same note worthy as one on the finger 🙁

that does look like Pinoccio… and gotta love a girl who is into flowers….

I’m looking at Rosie again – what a lucky child. I see so many, the children of children themselves .. chivvied and harassed yet ignored on important ways – to be allowed the time to learn about flowers and earth … ach, it makes me glad for her.

RYN. It’s Blackness Castle.

ryn: I’m jealous of your Mousers! You’ve got prize winners there! And their places for sharing their ‘gifts’ show great audacity and cleverness equal to their prowess. / Very excited for you and Nikki. September will be a signiificant month.

I thought of you when I saw Google featured Wilma Flintstone as an Olympic gymnast. http://www.google.com/logos/2012/gymnastics-2012-hp.jpg

ryn: No, he wasn’t winding me up. Not this time. 🙂

I imagine google has to be careful to not look like its O’s are mimicking the olympic rings.

Yes, one does suffer through many a melee as the mother of a toddler. But we all survive, one way or another. : )

August 14, 2012

You have very cool handwriting, dent notwithstanding. Poor Paige…takes me back to the decade of being last picked for sports teams in school. She was a star to clap for Reece.

🙂

your mum wrote back! that’s lovely. 🙂 We don’t write letters any more. Such a shame. Maybe I should go and do just that. That’s a very impressive dent btw…and 21 hours! great stuff!
