Sniper

Today, I was on AOL when I saw this poll. Here’s the question:

Is the media’s sniper coverage appropriate?

Here were the choices:

Yes, they’re informing us

No, they’re creating fear

I don’t know

Guess which one had the most votes.

No, they’re creating fear (47% 17378 people polled).

The yes received 41% or 15226 people polled; the I Don’t Know’s got only 11% response.

What do you think about this poll?

i think they are creating fear…they need to not report anything if they don’t have information. i have heard news reports on CNN more than once in the last few days, and even the person giving the report said “i don’t want to fall into speculation” (like they were reminding themselves). so how much of what we’re hearing is true anyway?

Unfortunately, since the roadblocks pop up immediately after the report of a shooting, I think the media has no choice but to report what’s going on. The traffic around the beltway comes to a complete stop. You can’t report the roadblocks without explaining the reason for them, and everything snowballs from there. Even when there was the lull in activity, the fear was still there, believe me.

yes, they are creating fear. But, people do need to be careful, if I lived in that area, I wouldn’t shut myself in my house or anything, but I’d be a hell of alot more careful when going in and out of stores, etc.

RYN: With the Amber warnings, law enforcement was using the role the media plays to their advantage, though. In this case, the media is hampering the investigation more than helping. That damn double edged sword analogy…. The coverage does tend to be excessive, and the media is demanding. There is always the bottom line to consider, and getting the scoop over the competitor.

I find the whole Sniper thing quite scary, and I don’t even live in America!

you know how they are gonna catch this guy? Media coverage. NO ONE would know what he looked like or what he drove, or any of the key details that will lead the cops to him. The cops have to rely on the public eye to catch this guy and if the public doesnt know what they are looking for, it is of no help.

I think they’re most certainly creating fear but it’s better for us to be informed. It’s kind of a situation where your screwed no matter how you look at it. Take Care =)

I woke up this morning to Landslide by the Dixie Chicks, they interrupted a GOOD SONG, to tell me there had been another shooting. I was smiling in bed.. I know I’m a dork, but then I got sad, big surprise huh

RY(last)N: To be honest, I hadn’t even thought about that aspect of it. I was thinking more along the lines of the constant spotlight would be giving citizens the chance at seeing something and calling it in. There is definitely more than one side to every situation, huh? Thanks for your notes.

i think they are creating fear my question isnt so much about the media..but about satelites, etc. Our goverment can look at an area at any time and focus in on someone’s face..why not use it?

in my opinion, i think they are doing both because while they show us what we should be aware of and what is actually going on they are giving people all these fears there are somethings the media shouldnt reveal like the messages the sniper reveals those scare me the most considering its all within where i live….
