News – More Bombers?

Americas

It seems ludicrous that, now that high altitude bombers are actually accurate, thanks to guided munitions, that more money isn’t spent there, rather than the masses of cash being thrown at fighters. They could likely trim the military budget if they spent more on updating and expanding our collection of bombers, rather than making fighters to deliver bombs. Wait.. maybe that’s one reason why.

Question of the week/month. Who will blink first, Bush or the Democrats? Not so clear, since some Democrats seem to be quite gun-ho about standing firm against the president.

Mexico City officials are told to leave their cars at home and bike to work once a month. This to take a small step in curbing pollution and traffic issues. Mayor Marcelo Ebrard, who proposed the plan, was the first to do it as well. I like that kind of politician. They don’t ask you to do something they’re not willing to do themselves.

The US Supreme Court has decided it won’t rule on whether Gitmo detainees have a right to challenge their detention in US Federal Courts. I’m disappointed. Stephen Breyer, David Souter and Ruth Bader Ginsburg dissented on the from the majority ruling, though two did so on procedural grounds only.

Pelosi goes to Syria to chat with Assad. Some continue to have quiet aneurisms over it, but any rational person(and there are some in Syria, despite all opinions) will be able to see that nothing will come of it. Much like Bush’s continued efforts to isolate the country.

According to one Saudi official, Israel will need to make a big step before peace talks start. Question is, even if he agreed to make such a step, could he implement it? Many in the government and among the people would be hotly opposed to such a step.

North Korean envoys stationed overseas are being ordered to send all but one of their children back to North Korea. This thought to be a bid to stop defections, but said envoys are defying the order. As well they should.

Seems Ukraine just can’t keep the political disorder down. Rivals Yanukovych and President Yushchenko are at odds over the president’s desire to dissolve parliament after accusing Yanukovych of illegally trying to increase his power base within it. And so soon after prior disorder got Yushchenko into the drivers seat.

Italian state TV is canning reality shows next year. Though it might not be a moral crusade, considering the low viewer numbers on two of their more popular shows.

General

A study shows that eating red meat significantly increases a post-menopausal woman’s chance of breast cancer. We’re talking a 2oz portion each day as how much the women in the study ate. Processed meat(bacon, sausages and the like) had an elevated risk as well. There is a note, however, that it’s extremely difficult to pin down the effect of specific parts of the diet on cancer risk. So just what it is about meat(or how its prepared) that does this isn’t yet known.

How’s this for a big, green building? Good for the environment by the look, but a bit.. you know, suggestive in shape..

Ukraine is THE story to watch in the coming weeks. The importance of the country and the region to US and Russian interests cannot be exagerrated. Iraq’s deadlocked, whereas the Ukraine situation will have more twists and turns than a Clancy novel.
