On Palestine, a note response
Mind you, Popey, we’re not talking about a tyrant government that is spending its money on luxuries.
We’re talking about a country that elected it’s leadership according to the US mandate for the Middle East, free and fair, and is strapped in just paying the wage its workers need to live and eat. Not to mention that the country is largely cut off from any attempt to do for itself, constantly harried by Israel, already having spend decades being oppressed and corrupted from within by past leaders and not likely to get better, even if the leaders tried to make things better, without a serious hand up from someone.
Also remember this is, by the look, not an entirely unreasonable government. Yes, Hamas is part of it and Hamas seems set against acknowledging Israel outright. However, they’ve delegated negotiating to Fatah, which has recognized Israel and is led by a man who seems willing to work on peace seriously, given a serious partner in Israel. Of course, this assumes that they aren’t forces to turn to the likes of Iran or worse for help, since the rest of the world has them in a financial choke hold. THis isn’t just turning down support, but forbidding others to give any aid.
It would be in our best interests for this nation to not fall into more disrepair than it has already. It’s in our best interests that this nation improve it’s opinion toward us, rather than see it drop. I’m not advocating showering Hamas with cash so they can ride around in BMWs. Honestly, I’d like the US and Israel to back off of Palestine and let them be, let Hamas show their true colors without the unhealthy stimulus of Israel’s oppression and the constant bitching of the US.
So when I say cut off, I don’t mean from aid. That’s one thing, but what the west has really done to Palestine is cut them off from any hope of recovery, blackmailing them into doing what they want. So do keep your analogies tighter, the one you purport doesn’t fit this situation.
I make my analogies in response to what I read. Which is words, not minds. Your past commentaries on the topic were vague and seemed more interested in portraying the situation the US and Israel as moral degenerates or at least failures. If you’d explained it a little more dispassionately, as you did above, then it would’ve been clearer and I would’ve responded differently.

Though it is a bit confusing when you say you “the US and Israel to back off of Palestine and let them be” and then insist that both ought to give them more money, “a serious hand up from someone” but without “showering Hamas with cash so they can ride around in BMWs.” It seems there are three choices a) we give them no money (the current situation which you criticize)

b) we give them money but with conditions (which you seem to disapprove with the ‘back off’ appeal) or c) we give them money with no conditions whatsoever (which you seem to disapprove of with the opposition to ‘showering Hamas with cash’ comment). So I really don’t know WHAT you’re advocating.

It took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out that you were talking to popeyechicken and not the “Pope”.
