Muse – Thoughts on the ‘War on Christianity’
This being a concept that has popped up often recently.
Personally, I think the term itself is silly. There is no organized war on Christianity. Believing so is, in my mind, akin to the sensitive victim complex that some Israeli leaders hold, where they call any slight anti-Semitism.
Surely, some people think they are waging a war on Christianity, but all of society? No. Society pushes for freedom, overall, which is counter to some Christian desires when it comes to outlawing certain things.
Besides which, even if there was a ‘war’ on Christianity it would be largely futile, in the same way that a war on terrorism is doomed to failure. You can’t declare war on an idea. Ideas are viral, moving through populations and insinuating themselves into the minds of millions rapidly. By then, nothing short of genocide can hope to snuff the idea and there will always be someone to take up and champion it.
Personally, I think that the hype over this sort of conflict is just that. Blowhards on both sides complaining over nothing. Society will keep an equilibrium, which is how it should be. Balance is what makes a perfect existence, not the triumph of one side or the other. Balance keeps extremism at bay and that’s good for everyone.
The ‘war on Christianity’ thing makes me mad. The Christians in the US act like whiny bullies who are sulking because the teacher made them play nice. Big babies with a victim complex. They know nothing about real religious oppression.

Oh there’s a war on Christianity, didn’t you know? There’s also a war on Jews, on Muslims, and according the atheists … a war on them. I guess we’re all at “war” and each side thinks its the victim.

All societies start out with fresh, fairly aggressive clear ideas. They all eventually watch those ideas and that culture disolve into a pile of sludge. Christianity was one of the pillars of US society. It is slowly being eroded away by this natural process of social entropy. Is there a battle going on to accelerate or stauch the erosion? Of course. But, it is ultimately a futile battle.
