Health – Surviving Nuke/Bio/Chemical Attack

This is something that I highlighted before, but as I can’t find the entry that has it, I’ll reproduce it here. I’ll be linking in up to the current list of entries I’ve made as a little Bio/Chemical survival guide. This is a common sense guide to the basics of surviving NBC situations, the first clear article I ever saw that dealt with the truth about how hyped chemical attack in particular is, as most forms of it are not as deadly as they are made out to be.

Don’t mistake me, such situations are still serious, but as I’ve stressed, with a level head you can increase your odds of getting out with minor injuries significantly. Reading this will help your survivability greatly as well. It’s too big to reproduce in one entry, but keeping in mind links tend to break over time, I’ll include as many links to it as I can find. Additionally, here’s a discussion of it on MetaFilter.

Note: An About.com link near the bottom suggests that some think it is inaccurate(the article itself is authentic and its writer’s identity confirmed), but opinions vary. At the base of it, nothing is one hundred percent certain. If you find corrections for aspects of this, let me know and I’ll likely make an additional post about inaccuracies.

And don’t forget to climb under your desk or a table.

Since the USA is the country most likely to use nuclear, biological or chemical weapons I understand why you’re so nervous. But relax dude, you’re unlikely to be the target!

RYN: I thought you were in Vancouver, Canada? A quick google search suggests that VA is the postcode for Virginia? Or am I completely lost? Either way you’re right, your NBC survival advice is most useful for those of us outside of the Americas. I’m still too lazy to read it though, in the event attack I’ll just have to follow Cthon’s advice :-/

RYN: Thank you for your note. It’s nothing major, you know, but sometimes the tiny things just get under your skin. I just feel lucky that I everyone I deal with is usually at least tolerant, if not accepting. I do think that, at least on this issue, society moving forward and taking positive steps. It’s just at a slower pace than I would wish for. Take care.
