News – Terrorist Seeking (2/2)
After ‘regime change’ in Iraq, its time to talk about it here at home. A line up of the nine democratic candidates that will be looking to invade Bush’s place.
Today’s Papers talks about many things, as usual. One note is of the first solid US action against Syria. They shut down a big oil pipeline from Iraq to Syria. I’ve heard that it was illegal, but I’m not clear on its origins and legality. Details on the meeting held by the US with Iraqi authority figures ended with a bland 13 point statement, while outside 20,000(by the NYT’s count) Shiite protestors chanted “No No Saddam, No No United States.”. I see the Iraqis are taking to the right to dissent with zeal. Promising. A writer for the most explains the start of the protest as being evoked by a “shadowy” radical Shiite group. At least one Analyst seems to get it, saying “This is going to get worse before it gets better…U.S. government officials are cognizant of these issues but don’t understand them.” More treasures were lost with the torching of the Ministry for Religious Affairs in Baghdad, destroying thousands of Korans, some thousands of years old. There are rumors, too, that Saddam gave a short outdoor speech on Wednesday, from a dozen residents in a loyal Baathist neighborhood, the stories having ‘varied little in their details”. Elvis sighting time. And more.. so much more. You’ll just have to read for more and for details. :p
UN Nuke inspectors want into Iraq to start looking again for their alleged nuke weapons program, but with them getting the cold shoulder, it seems unlikely they will be allowed in. It should be obvious to anyone that Bush won’t let the UN do anything unless they blow to his every request. Which is sad as it will only deepen the gulf between the UIS and many other nations, at a time when we should be in unity.
Wait, what’s this? The EU’s leaders are planning to make a unified statement on Iraq? I have two big questions.. What will it say and will UK, Spain and Italy be in accord with it? If the US’s coalition allies are aligned with the rest of the EU, the statement would have much more impact. We’ll have to wait and see. And hope for the best.
Seems the US, China and North Korea will be having a little talk soon. That’s good. I hope something positive comes about from it. That situation needs to be resolved.
Israel killed someone again. But this time they actually killed a militant. They must be proud.
Even with all their gear and new information, researches are uncertain on SARS. Dealing with microbes isn’t an exact science as of yet and dealing with this new bug is something not to be taken lightly or rushed. Many Americans are starting to become worried about SARS, even though it hasn’t broken out big here. Health workers are pushing for better measures to avoid getting sick when dealing with patients who might be and several Asian nations are rolling out the newly made tests quick to start detecting the sick.
On the front of pointless television, Married by America summed up in one article. After reading the summary, I’m all the more glad I didn’t waste a moment of time on that tripe and never will bother with any of these pointless reality shows. I see enough human suffering on a daily basis, I don’t need to see what greedy TV execs perpetrate in ever more selfish and unrestrained bids for our attention.

The administration is so out of tune with Arab attitudes, it’s funny. Many people here in the US actually think Iraqis are different from other Arabs and like the US government now or something.

RE: “I see the Iraqis are taking to the right to dissent with zeal. Promising.” That is interesting. That is exactly what Bush said today in a speech in St. Louis. I suppose you could say that even a broken clock is right twice a day. Still, I find hope in the messiness of Iraq and anywhere that people are truly free, or in Iraq’s case becoming free.
