Piccolo

I’m going to be playing piccolo in band now. I e-mailed one of the piccolo players to see if she might want me to take on some of the piccolo parts from a lady that just left band for the summer. She said that she’d be happy to let me go through and pick out what I want to play. And said that when the other lady comes back there are still usually plenty of piccolo parts to split 3 ways.

I actually just bought myself a new piccolo. I had a silver plated yamaha in high school. I liked it but didn’t love it. I sold it after I moved up here. A year or so ago I bought a really cheap no name piccolo just to have one again. Then last week I found a brand new solid silver Gemeinhardt Piccolo for $580. This specific model usually sells for around $1,400. It was a hell of a deal so I talked it over with hubby and he agreed to let me buy it. I just got it today and tested it out. It’s wonderful, it’s got a nice scale and a gorgeous tone.

The only downside to piccolo is that it kills my right ear to play really high notes. It’s worth it though b/c piccolo is just such a cool little instrument. 🙂

I’m probably going to try to sell my cheap no-name piccolo. I probably won’t get even $100 bucks for it but we’ll see. It’d be a good solution for a kid in marching band who doesn’t want to spend a lot on a piccolo but that’s about all it’s suited for.

Anyway, that’s all for now.
