Day Two
Ah, life with a puppy.
Yesterday was trying. Upon arriving in her new home Sara seemed to have forgotten any ounce of potty training she might have learned from the breeder. She was stopping to pee and poo every time she felt like it wherever she felt like it. She also howled until 3am. We were told by the breeder to NOT go to Sara in the middle of the night because it will, of course, reinforce the bad habit of howling equals attention.
We ended up getting all the cats in our bedroom with their food and litterbox and shutting the door and turning the TV on. We sat up and talked until 2am or so when I finally got so sleepy no noises could keep me awake. Hubby fell asleep shortly thereafter.
She’s done better today. We went out to the store and lunch and left her for two hours. When we came home she was eager to play with some new toys we brought home. 🙂 We’ve also left her in her crate and gone upstairs for half hour-an hour intervals and she’ll whine a little but starts entertaining herself. We want to make sure she’ll do well when we go back to work next week. We’ll be coming home mid-day for a few days as well and possibly hiring a dog walker (she used to be our landlord so we know her pretty well, she has goldens herself definate plus).
The potty training is coming back, she still pee’s and poo’s on the newspaper in her crate but only went on the rug once!! That was first thing in the morning too so that’s understandable. She’s mostly doing well and going outside. She appears to be a really smart puppy and she’s improved from yesterday 100%. We should probably be able to get a good nights sleep tonight. YAY! 🙂 For a 7 and a half week old puppy she’s doing amazingly well. I’ve started trying to teach her “sit” and although she has an extremely short attention span I think she’s starting to catch on that the word “Sit” might actually have a meaning.
Kenny went downstairs last night while Sara was asleep and peeked at her. Sally was down this evening and let the puppy come up to her and sniff her, sort of, she didn’t like it but she didn’t get mad. She’s been sitting on the counter watching Sara. Sara’s really curious as to what that cat thing is. 🙂
It’s like having a new baby in the house. Er, kinda. Well, I don’t have the slightest idea what I’m talking about since I don’t have kids. I do, however, have dogs, and they certainly are a handful. But worth every minute of the exasperation, because they’re precious!!! Good thing you’re taking time off work right now–seems as if you need to catch up on your sleep!
