Monday School: Truth based on facts, not opinions

Welcome back to Monday School… still “The Rational Corrective To All That Nonsense They Tried To Teach You Yesterday!” and that’s the truth rather than my personal, humble opinion.

So to begin today’s lesson, I would like to present the following video:

This is something I encounter everyday, people trying to be respectful even if it means denying the truth. If anything is worth fighting for, it is the truth. As Doctor Dawkins said in the video, gravity is not a matter of opinion, it’s the truth which is backed up by a substancial amount of evidence. No one questions how gravity works, it’s been proven beyond anyone’s deniability.

Yet there are some people who argue with me, trying act as if something like gravity is just a theory that hasn’t been proven yet. This act of utter stupidty clearly defines the denial that is present amongst those who cling to their bibles and whatever holy book the use unwilling to accept how things work on this planet. The same can be said for Evoultion. Yet despite the overwhelming evidence, people are still trying to dictate that creationism, which has zero evidence to support a single claim be recognized with the same respect as Evolution. That my friends is just flat out delutional.

As it was stated in the video, teachers are scared to offend the religious values of their students, even when it clashes with the facts that are backed up by science. Forget ballparks, Creationism isn’t in the same league or even the same sport as evolution when it comes to truth and evidence… so they don’t deserve to be treated the same when it comes to dictating school curriculum. One is the truth, the other is a unproven suggestion that has no basis to be in a single text book.

If someone wants to learn creationism, there is a perfect place for them to do so every single Sunday morning. There is no need to add it to the already growing list of practical things we are trying to ram into our children’s brains at such a young age. The people I have had the honor (sarcasm alert) of talking to assume that children should be presented with the option and pick for themselves which to believe. The problem with that is the evidence already tells us which one we should teach in classrooms, that’s the one with countless pieces of evidence.

What seems to be confusing a lot of people is the fact that we call it the ‘Theory’ of Evolution. The problem might stem from that fact that people who support Creationism are confused to what theory really means in the scientific context. According to the dictionary, here is the definition of theory:

A coherent group of tested general propositions, commonly regarded as correct, that can be used as principles of explanation and prediction for a class of phenomena: Einstein’s theory of relativity.

Theory doesn’t mean guess, it means something that has been tested and thus been regarded as correct. The idea that the Earth circles around the sun is a theory as well, another theory that also happens to be contradicted by the bible. Are we seeing a pattern here people?

I love the last line of this video, when Dawkins basically throws down the gaunlet. He’s right, truth isn’t a matter of opinion… the evidence supports it and you must accept it. The same goes for Evolution, it’s the plain truth and we have countless fossils and other forms of evidence (you know that stuff called proof?) to back it up.

No such evidence exists on the other side, as Dawkins pointed out in the video it’s all made up. Until such evidence is presented there is no reason to give it the time of day, especially in the classroom.

Dawkins is one of the (if not the) best people ever to argue for science and reason. He’s always calm, rational, intelligent, and willing to try hammering out the facts with people, but he has no problem snarking their butts off if they’re being too stupid. Gotta love ‘im!! 😛

I love Dawkins’ Channel 4 series. I wish he’d make more of them–and that I got Channel 4. On a related note, Adam Savage once quipped, “Gravity isn’t just a good idea–it’s the law.”
