Predictions: 78th ANNUAL ACADEMY AWARDS

It’s that time of the year again… and I have seen most of the movies in question, so this is a rather informed opinion. Not fully, but close enough. So here are my picks for tomorrow’s Oscars. I can’t wait to see what kind of job Jon Stewart does as host… should be at least a huge improvement on last year’s horrid choice.

As usual, here are my picks of what I think should win and what I think will win. But I’m curious to what you think. What/who do you think will take home tomorrow night’s Oscars?

Peter

Best Picture:

  • Brokeback Mountain
  • Capote
  • Crash
  • Good Night, and Good Luck
  • Munich

What Should Win: Good Night And Good Luck

    What Will Win: Brokeback Mountain

In a year when we had a lot of fluff, all five of these films deserve to be on this list. Out of all the moves nominated, the one that I enjoyed watching most was ‘Good Night, And Good Luck’… yet I’m not a fool. I realize that there has been a lot of buzz for Brokeback and for good reason. It’s an amazing story about twarted love, and the Academy loves stuff like that, and it will be interesting to see how people react to the Gay Cowboy movie taking the big award.

    Best Actor:

  • Philip Seymour Hoffman, Capote
  • Terrence Howard, Hustle & Flow
  • Heath Ledger, Brokeback Mountain
  • Joaquin Phoenix, Walk the Line
  • David Strathairn, Good Night, and Good Luck

Who Should Win: Heath Ledger, Brokeback Mountain

Who Will Win: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Capote

Again, another category that is full of well deserving actors who gave career performances. I would be happy to see any of them walk out with this award… but while I would cast a vote for Heath Ledger for his commanding presence in Brokeback, I think the buzz for Hoffman will be too great.

    Best Actress:

  • Judi Dench, Mrs. Henderson Presents
  • Felicity Huffman, Transamerica
  • Keira Knightley, Pride & Prejudice
  • Charlize Theron, North Country
  • Reese Witherspoon, Walk the Line

Who Should Win: Reese Witherspoon, Walk The Line

Who Will Win: Reese Witherspoon, Walk The Line

This one seems like the one true lock for Oscar night. Reese like Phoenix did an amazing job both acting and doing her own singing for this role as June Carter… Johnny Cash’s second wife. The other performances are good but no where near the calibre of what Reese did with her role. I would be shocked if she didn’t get an award tomorrow.

    Best Supporting Actor:

  • George Clooney, Syriana
  • Matt Dillon, Crash
  • Paul Giamatti, Cinderella Man
  • Jake Gyllenhaal, Brokeback Mountain
  • William Hurt, A History of Violence

Who Should Win: George Clooney, Syriana

Who Will Win: Jake Gyllenhaal, Brokeback Mountain

The buzz seems to be folloing Clooney and his role in the highly contraversial and thought provoking Syriana. Yet if Brokeback makes a sweep, this could turn the tide in Gyllenhaal’s favor, especially since George has a better chance of winning one of the other two nominations that night so I doubt he’ll go home empty handed either.

    Best Supporting Actress:

  • Amy Adams, Junebug
  • Catherine Keener, Capote
  • Frances McDormand, North Country
  • Rachel Weisz, The Constant Gardener
  • Michelle Williams, Brokeback Mountain

Who Should Win: Amy Adams, Junebug

Who Will Win: Rachel Weisz, The Constant Gardener

    Best Director:

  • Ang Lee, Brokeback Mountain
  • Bennett Miller, Capote
  • Paul Haggis, Crash
  • George Clooney, Good Night, and Good Luck
  • Steven Spielberg, Munich

Who Should Win: Ang Lee, Brokeback Mountain

Who Will Win: Ang Lee, Brokeback Mountain

    Original Screenplay:

  • Crash, Paul Haggis & Bobby Moresco
  • Good Night, and Good Luck, George Clooney & Grant Heslov
  • Match Point, Woody Allen
  • The Squid and the Whale, Noah Baumbach
  • Syriana, Stephen Gaghan

  • Brokeback Mountain, Larry McMurtry & Diana Ossana
  • Capote, Dan Futterman

I just posted my predictions and picks in my diary. 🙂

Here’s a prediction that is bound to come true. Hollywood award shows are just a way of stroking egos in that slimy city and this guy will never watch one even if it’s to put him to sleep.

I like felicity huffman more than reese witherspoon, but saw neither movie so… I’ve liked Dan Futterman since he was in Shooting Fish. He was also on Judging Amy. Had no idea he was writer too. Hope he wins. And go Philip Seymor Hoffman. He rocks.

This is a good idea, choosing both who SHOULD and who WILL win…haha because there’s certainly a difference! Check out my picks on my latest entry and tell me what you think.
