Lunch

Lunch went well. He didn’t seem to suspect that I was doing it to reach out at all. It was taken much more apropos. We both normally eat at our desks, but I just kept my lunch packed today and spent my last couple dollars in the cafeteria. He needs to get away from his desk more often. Eating didn’t take long, but we took a full hour break. (It doesn’t matter how long our lunch is as long as we put in the required time eventually.) He hasn’t been eating in the cafeteria because, as a Help Desk tech, he expects people to bug him. But that doesn’t happen in our building. It never happened to me, so I doubt it would ever happen to him. People in this company have enough respect for your lunch break to not bother you during it [unless you’re eating at your desk.] I get interrupted more at my desk than I do in the cafeteria. I could be in the middle of stuffing my mouth at my desk and no one hesitates to interrupt my feeding frenzy. So, I think I’ll make a point of grabbing him on my way to the cafeteria every once in a while. I get to eat something better than ramen noodles on those days. I prefer to lead by example [as my boss pointed out,] and I’ve been working at this company long enough to know what he could do to make his life a little easier. I understand where he’s coming from because I’ve been there myself, but I was there much earlier on. He’s several years older than me and that just makes his situation worse.

I’m guessing you didn’t have grits for lunch.

RYN: He only has one cat, but she’s at least 15 (he can’t remember exactly when he got her) and would kill another cat in the house. I believe her being that old, she should have some dignity in her remaining years. Plus, she’s having litter box issues right now and I don’t want another cat to aggravate them or to pick her new habits up.
