Grits

I hate the taste of grits, and it looks way too similar to cream of wheat. I didn’t feel like eating oatmeal this morning and the pot of what looked like cream of wheat was labelled as grits. So this dialog in my head began, “It sure looks like cream of wheat, but it says grits. Do I go by appearance or the label? I’ve mistaken grits for cream of wheat before, but it really looks like cream of wheat this time. They’ve mislabelled things in this cafeteria before, but have they this time?” And on and on, back and forth. I finally went with what my eyes were telling me and I was right. Their cream of wheat isn’t wonderful, but it’s lighter than oatmeal.

A guy I work with writes on LiveJournal and has let me read his journal there. He wrote about being depressed yesterday and how he doesn’t feel like he has any friends here (here being this state at least.) I don’t know his whole story, but I’ve known him for a few years now. I never really noticed that he mainly only talks about online friends, and only after reading his journal did I learn that he does most things (going to movies, concerts, etc.) alone. I guess after knowing so many people here who have family and friends outside of work, I just assumed he did too. Anyway, I was thinking of having lunch with him, but I don’t know if he’d take that as I will only pay attention when he cries for help. I guess I’ll find out. I know that he alienates people pretty easily and possibly without knowing it by complaining a lot and talking about leaving. I know there’s more to him than that, but you have to make the effort to get past it. For most, I think, there has to be some reward for getting past that, and I doubt anyone he works with (I work fairly close with them too even though we’re not on the same team) see’s any reward in it. After all, they have all the friends they need.

Grit-hater. I think having lunch with him sometime would be a really nice idea.
