hotter than Heater in Hellmouth
And hotter than Hooker in Heater. I googled that because I wasn’t too sure of the exact quote and came up with a whole page of people quoting Firesign Theatre regarding heat. How odd.
And it IS hotter than Hooker in Heater and hotter than Heater in Hellmouth, too. According to the Weather Channel, it’s 88. And feels like 90. Which for us is like Greenland being 110. Even I am thinking it’s just a tad warmish. Yesterday the Dean sent us all home at four because of the heat. There is only one small ineffective air conditioning unit in our building, although apparently we’re all getting window units soon. I don’t really want one – I like the open windows, and my office is fine with that and the ceiling fan – but of course I am very heat resistant and think 80 degrees is fine. I’m sure I won’t be forced at gunpoint to use it.
On the plus side, it hasn’t rained in several hours.
I’m actually typing this at work because…. {drumroll of disbelief}…. I don’t have anything to do. All I have is entering summer grades onto checksheets, and that’s not urgent. And is also a little boring. Which is good!! Boring is good!! I’m certainly not complaining. Hooray for boring!!
The funny thing is that starting yesterday, we were supposed to be really really busy with graduating seniors. For the rest of the week. And we did work on them all day yesterday, but by about ten this morning… we were done. I’m kind of shocked. I started to say, "What??!!!! That’s IT???????" but I restrained myself. All we did was make sure everyone who applied to graduate had actually met all the requirements. Which was, ummmmmm… not that difficult. It sounded like a huge ordeal, and really wasn’t. At all. Most have a graduation audit done during their last semester, and they just have to follow that. Not rocket science. It also seems to me that we were doing a lot of work we didn’t even need to BE doing, but I realize I haven’t really been though this yet so there may be some subtleties I am as yet unaware of. Ha.
No, really I’m sure there is more to it than THIS!
Also funny is my shock at how my coworkers take their time and are very very thorough and double check and triple check and then go back and check once more. I’m SO not used to having time for that- we didn’t have time to check anything ONCE where I came from. Which is why this department reportedly has the lowest rate of screw-ups on campus. And that’s important, when it comes to things like letting someone graduate who is still lacking core courses, or whatever. I’m sure my ex-department had the highest rate of screw ups, due to having no staff and no time and everyone doing three jobs at once. This is weird. In a GOOD way.
So that’s what I’ve been doing at my new job!
At home, I’ve been unpacking. And moving stuff around. Because our house looks, seriously, like we just moved in. We decided to take this opportunity – the opportunity given us when we had to move everything downstairs to somewhere else – to get organized. Organized! What a concept! And I am taking this opportunity to move a bunch of my books upstairs. Into our spare room, my "study". They’ve all been downstairs in Baker B’s "study" for, oh, NINE YEARS. And although they were on bookshelves, they were in no order whatsoever because when we moved in I intended to find a better place for them, and he just threw them willy-nilly onto the bookshelves to get them out of the way. So although all my ten million squazillion books WERE down there, it was pretty impossible to find a book if I wanted a particular one. Since Baker B also has some ten million squazillion books himself down there. It was usually easier to just go buy a new copy of whatever I was trying to find.
So now I have two of the bookshelves that were in his study moved into mine, and I hauled my exercise bike clothes rack downstairs (I may actually ride it down there, you never know. I could not possibly ride it any LESS now that it’s down there) and we hauled out the wardrobe that used to be in our bedroom until my aunt died and I took my grandfather’s much much nicer wardrobe and the first not nice at all wardrobe ended up in my study. Where it was very handy for hanging extra clothes. Out of view, unlike the exercise bike. But it is physically impossible to fit it and two bookshelves and the bed and all the other furniture that I have more use for into the study. So right now the first wardrobe is sitting in the middle of the livingroom floor. Along with a whole bunch of boxes from downstairs that need to be gone through.
Of course I have so many books that two bookshelves is not enough, so some are going back downstairs where Baker B has plenty of room. I even have a box to get completely rid of, although it’s a very small box compared to what I can’t seem to part with. But it’s been lots of fun sorting books, and I love having them all within reach again. Even if it does mean having a very ugly wardrobe in the middle of the livingroom floor.
Well, I must return to posting grades. I’ll leave you with some horse show pictures – the annual Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show that I have become a devotee of.
I’m surprised your old job hasn’t been trying to keep you very busy! The new job sounds heavenly. The heat index here is currently 106. Ugh.

She isn’t feeding that white horse beer is she? You are so totally my new work enviornment role model. I believe I’ve said that before but it bears repeating. How fun to revisit all your books! I love doing that.

A managable job must be much nicer. I gave up my books in one move. I am to the point where I want to get rid of anything that I don’t use within a year. There are lots of things around that I want to take to the dump. I am wondering if we could get a truck for the day. I am starting to think those modern rooms with practically nothing in them is my style. 🙂 I liked the horse pictures.

Too bad you can’t do something with your photography. I mean, you could make note cards or posters or something. You are very talented. It’s hot as hello kitty here, too, hon. I can only imagine how bad it is further south. *snorts* Clothes rack. I love when you do that.

It was 100 degrees here today. Unbefreakinlevable. It was not as humid as Charlotte though. Charlotte was toasty at 7AM with 90% humidity-YUCK. At least when it gets hot here it’s still pretty! The pics are all great as always. I am sooooooo happy for you that your new position may have boring days here and there. You deserve it that’s for sure.

Hmm, I had no idea you could ride those clothes racks. Am glad the wardrobes are being put to use. The horse photos bring back great memories – you were the first horse fan I can remember as a kid. It’s hot here, and so muggy the wind feels like dog breath. But most of us aren’t too affected – we just feel a little inconvenienced between our air conditioned cars and air conditioned houses and air conditioned work, stores, etc. Can’t wait to get my car back tomorrow, after almost 3 weeks.
