charleston pictures part II !!
The Old Bridges over the river –
This is just the start of the old bridges – they’re a couple of miles long, and dip down under the New Bridge.
This is from the pedestrian section of the New Bridge. You can see the tops of the Old Bridges over on the far side of the bridge. The New Bridge goes WAY higher than the old ones, but is far less scary.
The remains of the Old Bridges, which are fast being torn down. The two lane one is the Really Really Old Bridge, which goes from Mt. Pleasant to Charleston. As you can see, it’s VERY narrow. No fun with SUVs crowding you. The other side, on the left, is the Slightly Less Very Very Old Bridge, which had three lanes – two lanes coming from Charleston to Mt. Pleasant, and one lane going the other direction, same way as the Really Really Old Bridge. So busses, trucks, and scaredy-cats could take that bridge instead of the teeny two-lane one. You had to go a completely different way to get on it, though, so it was easy to miss the Less-Scary-Bridge exit. And then you had to drive over Really Really Old Scary Bridge with a Panic-Stricken-Baker-B freaking out in the passenger seat. Not that that ever happened. Of course not.
Old bridges and some of the port area in the background.
A ship, which has nothing at all to do with any of the bridges. This is from Sullivan’s Island, and I find it somewhat unnerving how close these things come to the beach. I was standing on the beach, and this is NOT a zoom shot. It looks like you could walk right out to it. Sullivan’s Island is on the waterway where all the ships go to dock, so it isn’t THAT weird, but still. I don’t see a lot of ships in my normal life, so I find being that close to one that’s in the water pretty amazing.
Oh, look, this will be three parts!
That first one is very atmospheric and I love the angles in the second one muchly, it is a veritable geometry of bridges!

How did you get the aerial shot of that two-lane bridge? Did you have to climb up high somewhere? Oh, I’m going to faint.

The ship pic is my favorite.

I am swooning over your bridge pics (and that you don’t like ASSUVs either!). I had to go dig this link out that you might like: http://bridgepros.com/projects/Millau_Viaduct/ Someone sent me the most amazing panorama of it that is really awesome but not on the site. If you’re interested I’d be happy to forward it.
