Turn That Generator By Any Means

I should not be writing an entry at the moment, but whatever.

I got home last night and the electricity was off in the condo. I kind of freaked a little because I couldn’t tell how long it had been off or if I needed to worry about the contents of the fridge and freezer or whatnot. I went to use the bathroom and discovered that I find it really uncomfortable to pee in the dark. Good thing to know about myself, I think. I called Floyd’s Barbershop to have Sarah cut my hair (she was the one that did it and re-did it last time) but they said she probably wouldn’t be available until 8pm. So I just hung around my de-electrified house for 45 minutes. I cleaned out my purse. It was a momentous occasion. I’m trying to figure out a better purse organization system. The purse I have isn’t very old, it was actually a Christmas gift from Kyle, but the snap on the front is worn out. It’s still functional of course, but I don’t have any set pockets for my things so I never know exactly where my keys are and I end up searching far too long for them. The simple solution is just to get a latching keychain (which I had but somehow lost recently – this is amusing because it was a compass) and just hook my keys onto the D-rings of the purse straps. The more fun solution is to make a pattern for my own purse and get to sewing! That way I can put pockets exactly where I want them and need them and they will get the most use. I could make each pocket specific for its contents so for instance, my iPod pocket wouldn’t hold anything else. Something like that. I could use some of the material I have now for my purse as scraps and making pockets and things. And I could keep the same strap, because I am shit at making straps. The more I think about this, the more I want to do it.

Anyway, after regaling Kyle with wonderfully entertaining texts about all of my movements without electricity since my phone was the only piece of electronic equipment I had at my disposal, the electricity came back on. I had called Rachel and told her about it earlier just to make sure she was aware. She called me later and let me know it was part of a blackout that Broomfield was experiencing and the power had only been out since 4pm. So that wasn’t such a big deal. I called Floyd’s and put my name on the waiting list, grabbed my wavy paper cutter since I was going to take it down to her after my hair cut and then was on my way. I listened to more of Ender’s Game on the drive to the hair place. It’s a good book. I’m rather enjoying it and feel I will be disappointed when it ends.

Sarah recognized me and chit-chatted with me for a bit and then got to work. I asked for the shampoo, too, because I freaking love having someone else wash my hair. Especially leaning back and relaxing. It’s got to be one of the most tranquil experiences. And totally worth the $3 it cost. I told her I wanted my hair above my shoulders but wasn’t sure if I wanted it layered still or whatnot. She said she’d keep the layers and shorten them up and then frame my face. Sounded good to me, so I let her do her thing.

I think it looks better in person, but maybe that’s just me. This is the shortest it’s ever been, at least since I started talking in full sentences. I’m finding it easy enough to get used to and enjoy the front being short, but the back being so short is odd. My neck keeps getting cold!

I took these this morning after I got ready for work. I should probably invest in a curling iron, though I shudder at the thought. It would probably be better than blow-drying my hair with a round brush all the time, though. Possibly less time-consuming and more energy efficient. I don’t know if that justifies the expense, though. It feels vain and pointless. I donated my old curling iron like 5 years ago because I didn’t really use it ever and I was trying to cut down on my material possessions. It’s dumb because I feel a strong aversion to getting a new curling iron, but am excited at the prospect of buying some small clips to use in my hair. What the hell is the difference? Aside from the expense and the space each will take up in my already cluttered bathroom, of course.

After the hair cut I went down to my mom’s. We had pizza and hung out for awhile, just chatting and watching some TV. It was fun. Kendra was Miss Cranky Pants because she was tired and it was late, but eventually she went to bed and the rest of us spent 30 minutes looking for medical tape for Aaron’s fracture pinky before I left. It was a fun-filled night for all! Actually, it was. I’m just being sarcastic.

I didn’t get home until about 12:30, maybe a bit earlier. I read some OD, tidied up a little, played with my hair a bit, chatted with Kyle and then went to sleep. My original plan was to do some puzzles before bed, but I was too tired. I don’t think I got to sleep until 2am or so. Ridiculous. I was dead tired when I woke up this morning, too. I’m going to try to go to bed at like 9 or 10 tonight. I won’t get home until 9, actually, so I’ll shoot for 10. That means I might not log on to my computer when I get home – it’s such a huge distraction and I really do need to get some sleep. My schedule this weekend is 11-6 on Saturday and then 2-8:30, I think, on Sunday. This sounds fun because the store closes at 7 on Sundays. We’ll see how it goes! The bus, by the way, that I was thinking of taking to work, doesn’t run on the weekends. Go figure.

I need to call my credit counseling agency to see if they can work out a new payment plan for me that would be less than it is currently. It would help immensely, of course. I should do that at lunch. Part of me is hesitant because I worry that they’ll be like, “Yeah, right we can’t do anything for you! Suck it up you spendthrift!” I know they wouldn’t, but still. My lack of financial prudence is a sore spot for me – having to lay that out on the line with a stranger is awkward and uncomfortable. Calling the credit counseling agency in the first place last summer was the best thing I could have done (though I wish I had done it sooner) and I’m glad I did it. But that doesn’t lessen my apprehension about calling again to do some “recounseling.”

I should probably get back to work or something. I’m going to lunch soon, but haven’t decided what I will do for lunch. I already ate the salad I brought back from my mom’s (which came with the pizzas). I should walk around for at least 30 minutes and listen to Ender’s Game some more. I want to buy somesmall clips to play with in my hair for later. Maybe I’ll walk to the store listening to Ender’s Game, buy some clips and then walk back. Brilliant. I’m not sure if that will take up my whole hour, but I’m prepared to try.

I am the same way with my purse – everything falls to the bottom and gets all mixed up and I have to search forever for whatever I need. And really, I am not good at organizing anything unless everything has its very own appropriately sized and shaped space. Once I get my craft room back in shape and wrap up all the other projects I’m working on I want to start learning to sew properly. I don’t expect to do a whole lot of sewing for fun, but I want to know how to do it so when I need something sewn it’s not a big scary ordeal. If you can, take pictures of the purse making process, ’cause I might steal the idea!

I think it suits you! Now I will know what to look for at the airport. AT THE AIRPORT, MISTY. I was going to say something else. Shoot. Oh right! The weirdest part for me about short hair is the first few times I wash it.

Ooh, there’s an audiobook of that? Cool. (I liked that book.)

I really like the pictures. You should use the first one for your profile picture that we were talking about. I’m glad you like Ender’s Game, Ender’s Shadow is really good too, but not as good. CB,

you may want a straightening iron, instead. that would probably work better. i LOVE mine. once i got a straightening iron, i wondered what i did without it before. but maybe that’s just my vanity coming out 🙂 love the new hairs!

I often go to the bathroom and, while I’m peeing, Karen flicks the light off on me (the switch is outside the door). As she reads this note she is smiling and this only serves to remind her to do it again.

The only truly good books are the ones you’re sad to finish reading. I don’t know about you, but I can usually tell within the first couple of pages whether or not the current book I’m reading will be like that.

That’s an awesome idea as I have the same purse woes. I need a new purse too. Even though I only got mine for Xmas, but from my mom, not from Kyle. ;op Love the cut! It’s absolutely adorable on you.~jo

I’ve been meaning to get into audiobooks lately especially since there’s a slew of them at the used bookstore but I just haven’t picked up any yet. Plus, most of them are tapes. I might just go retro and dust off some tape player.

I should call a credit counseling agency (especially since I couldn’t get a freaking line of credit – ARGH). I don’t even know what they could do for me (lower my interest rate? that’d be good).

I actually have a really old tape player. The kind thats… you know, the old kind that’s not in the shape of a boombox but like a clunky tape recorder. I suppose if one is an awesome multitasker, one can read one book and listen to another at the same time. Heh.

My purse has a billion pockets, as does my bookbag. That’s why I love Mountain Equipment Co-op.

Good luck with the reduced payments. (Supposedly there was some new rule/law/whatever that upped everyone’s minimum payments across the board [or perhaps just based on their credit rating, I don’t know], in an effort to get people out of debt sooner. I don’t think it’s working, personally.)

ryn: If you can get them, it’s just as well to bring them with you. Otherwise you’d have to rush them, and that would just cost too much. Thanks again!

I feel same about financial issues. LOVE the haircut! Very cute on you. Re: purses, you could also combine your knitting ninja (kninja?) + sewing maven skillz and make a knit purse and then add all the pockets your little heart desires to the lining. Knitty.com has all kinds of cute purse projects.
