Harps and pipers and shade, oh my!

For those of you who don’t normally have any interest in the weather around the northeastish part of the United States of America: Yesterday was HOT!!!! I mean seriously. I do not know how the performers, and the lovely musical instrument expert, survived in their costumes. (Well okay, the band Searson, they were dressed coolly, but playing the way they did, so much energy and such fine sounds! And the women got up and did some fabulous Irish step dancing too!) Ach though … the pipe band, they were fabulous, but even kilts don’t help with all the other regalia they wear, and the very tall fellow with the large staff (you know, the leader … must find out his proper title) and the tall furry hat! Arrrrgh how I felt for them and especially him.

My favorite thing at the festival, I think, was seeing little Irish American girls in their play clothes getting out on the floor in front of the stage and step dancing … not for competition or anything, just for the sheer joy of doing it to music meant for it. They were gorgeous and adorable.

I had a wonderful day spent in wonderful company. The train ride home … well, harumph. Overcrowded, loads of folks stuck standing in the aisles, all of which meant that if there was AC running it made very little difference. Then when we finally made it to Grand Central, about 20 minutes late, walking on the platform like a mob of zombies out of some Blank of the Dead movie on a hot platform … sigh. Soon enough I was on a subway (after a long wait) and then had a nice walk homeward.

I whittered at bedtime. I’m still smiling from all the wonders of yesterday. What a lovely way to start the week!

Reflections

The sun
so strong it withered everything
outside
dared as it headed toward setting
to show itself
glaring and gorgeous and brazen
past the mean barbed fences
just above the dump
laying claim to the day’s wonder
when all the true memories were
made in the shade
where music of ages rang

in a small nook
where thoughts and truths
and stories of life and love
unfolded
on a day with its own glory

Deep night has fallen
still a smile flitters and spreads
on my lips
because despite that brazen fire
I wear the day’s memories
to bed

I guess none of us had better take your comment about the tall leader with the large staff out of context. I once heard a Scots Piper answer the question about what they wore under the Kilt by telling the woman that it was a Clan Secret but if she would give him her hand he would let her discover it for herself. I imagine that this is a stock and rehearsed line.
