Naughty was nice

See the below account to see what the title means. See what time I was writing the below account. Now imagine what shape I’m in today. I am deeply grateful that the only things I had to drink were iced coffees and diet Cokes. TGIF … really! Oh: the comedians were caught at the Gotham Comedy Club here in Manhattan; the first Thursday of every month is Gay and Lesbian Night, also known as Homo Comicus.

A night out with the women

It has gone so far into too late; and I am the first one home. C is still riding the subway; D is driving upstate with L.

Oh, the comedians were wonderful! The emcee was this adorable chubby character called Murray Hill (which happens to also be the name of the part of town in which I work). The women I was with were wonderful and very good at just going up to people and starting to talk to them, even the comedians! I actually managed to splutter thanks and admiration at two of them (Michele Balan and Julie Goldman), and to tell Ms. Goldman that I loved her song (it’s brilliant); she said she’s going to record it. I must get hold of it when it’s done. And there was a famous woman there: Kate Clinton (no relation to Bill); she is extraordinary.**

Then I was boonswoggled (not really, I was quite willing sort of, but I like the word) into going for a drink (okay, a diet Coke); we wound up at Rubyfruit, where the karaoke was jumping. There were these two women, CeCe and Naughty, with the most amazing voices! They do such an incredible job on the Olivia Newton-John (CeCe) and John Travolta (Naughty) duets from Grease!

So … Naughty does a Van Morrison song, and the whole place (well, me and I know there are others) is all lustily singing along to the part that goes “Sha la la la la la la …” but Naughty pulls me up and holds the mike up to my face for the “sha” bits; dances with me a bit; and … well, as she said afterward a few times … “I broke your cherry!”

Yes, folks, my karaoke cherry has been broken. Next stop: Vermont, where I can hit Karaoke Night with LiteBrite! Wooooohooooo!!!

But only if I can get home by midnight.

** I could remember none of the comedians’ names as I wrote this at 1:19 a.m. at the morning; I had to Google lesbian comedians to find out who I saw (I knew one of them was named Kate …). So yeah, I cheated a little bit. There are two more comedians: Eddie Sarfaty (also very funny) and another woman named Lisa and it’s going to do my head in if I don’t remember her name sometime soon.

Okay … to work with me already. And once more for the road: TGIF!

That’s a great story! My karoake cherry’s still in tact. I’m saving myself. Indefinately. Maybe you have a caffeine hangover. Gotta mix a little whiskey with your coffee or rum with your diet Coke. Take the edge off.
