The Wounded Land
In which our Hero shakes the dust off his old own self to see if the new version of his old chair still fits.
After the initial shock at the possibility that an old loss might be undone, I’ve found myself wondering if it’s possible to open this door without feeling the strain of those same old wounds. I mean, “previous entry” instantly flips us back to 2014 and the end of days, Gentle Reader, and how does that transition not get mentioned at the very least?
On the
other hand, I have great affection for what this place once was, and I have curiousity about what it might become. Not what it was, certainly, that’s unachievable. But what it could be… that’s interesting.

I understand that not all my issues may matter to the management. Issues so far.
- ###Backups
- Where’s the export
option? - Please don’t expect me as a user here without a working export capability that includes notes and entry metadata like chapter membership.
- ###Editor:
- The editor hijacks my right click context menu, which has lost me the use of the spell checker.
- The list style is forcing my text to bold. Appears to happen in the editor only
- The shift-enter should create a break tag, but in the block quote it appears to create a new instance of the tag
- The
space after the block quote appears to be inconsistent. Check the styles. - ###Entries:
- Outlined list in the editor lost all structure on output. If it’s not supported, the editor should not allow it.
- The “publish date” appears to default to the opening of the editor page, not the time I clicked save. The “published on” date should probably default to blank rather than being populated on page creation.
- ###Permissions:
- The comments/visibility filter options
include “Public/Private/Friend” It would be good for community building to have a “OpenDiary Members” option. Public to people who have logged in, don’t have to be my friend. - As I recall, this was an option on the old site
- Chapters don’t have permissions
- There’s no bulk permission manager.
- For returning diarists, this will be an issue since content that was considered buried and lost is suddenly in the light again.
- ###Chapters
- Chapters appear to be populated (I can filter by them from the diary page) but the chapter manager shows zero entries under each chapter
- Chapters also used to be a fast way to control permissions on a swath of entries. That seems to be no longer available
Hi Serin, thanks for the detailed list – I’m going to address some of those here, but will add all of it to our internal ticketing, where appropriate.
Exports: we will definitely have an export option, it just hasn’t been activated yet. By the time the site launches publicly, it will be there – because I assume there will be plenty of people who will want to come back just long enough to export their old diary, and not interested in rejoining.

Lots of excellent and thoughtful suggestions here. I’ve mostly had questions about privacy filters and old entries, and you raise a lot of good points.

Editor right-click: this is true, our editor toolbar uses the right-click, but we were expecting people to use a spellcheck that is inherent in their browser (like Chrome or Safari which highlights misspelled words as they happen). What browser/spellchecker are you using?
I am using the internal spell checker, today in Chrome. I type the word “unachievable” and chrome highlights it with a red underline to indicate the spelling issue. I right-click to access the browser’s spell-check context menu, but the right-click was intercepted by the editor. Which means I can’t find out why unachievable offends chrome, or take suggestions to fix the issue.
@serin ah right, got it. Will look into this.

Notes on the list styles, block quote, shift-enter, outlined list: I will take all of these into the ticketing system so we can test them (this is why you are here to help test, thanks!)
Publish date: I agree, should at least be optional to be when you save. The question is whether somebody will want the date to be when they started the entry vs. when they saved the final revision. Now that you bring it up, I suspect the latter.
I was actually with you about how to handle this, until I hit save and saw that my entry had been posted 52 minutes earlier. Could make it an option to cover both camps, but people who care about the time could just set the publish date then.
@serin I had the same experience just now when I posted an entry and it said it was from 17 minutes ago – that’s not right. We will look at how to handle this, but I think it will be that timestamp will be the first time an entry is published, and then not change after that (because you don’t want the timestamp to change every time the user edits the entry).

Permissions: you’re correct that there was a bulk manager and a chapter option for privacy settings in the old site. Both of these are things we’ve considered, and I believe one or both of them is necessary to exist before the site goes live. I’m planning on having at least one in place before public launch.
Overall, remember that what you are testing is not the finished product – we asked you here to get your input, so all of this is very much appreciated!
Redoing note:
I know it’s work-in-progress, and I know it’s a “new” version of the site, so not everything I find is going to be actually important to the intention. I’ll keep tossing stuff at you as I see ’em and trust you to figure out how it all fits in the big picture.
Might dedupe things if we can see what’s already in the tracker. Or might help you prioritize by seeing what issues are dupes so not sure what to recommend there.
Two note issues:
CSS issue: The cursor starts on N in “Enter your reply” If a note is too long I get an error page. My note is gone and there’s no links or direction for what to do next.
Last, and properly first over all the others, thank you for doing this.
@serin yeah, I saw that one on the note starting on the N earlier, thanks. I haven’t been able to reproduce the error with a note too long, but will take another look.

I do not have the brain cells tonight to ask or contemplate questions, but am glad you are here 🙂

Serin! Hi! (Big big hugs and kiss on your cheek!) I am here too and SO glad to be back! I’ve got to stop rushing around leaving notes and actually get busy writing an entry—but it’s just so good to see those of you who are here! xoAdagio
How marvelous to see you in this new-old-here. I was very excited to reclaim you as a friend in the notation here, but it would seem that the system already knew you were important. It’s a little anticlimactic but better that then accidentally miss you, I s’pose. Hi! (HUG)
