A man stabbed his wife while she worked as a waitress Wednesday in Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill and Bar in Grand Forks.
Kevin Moore, 42, was in the Grand Forks jail Wednesday night, awaiting a first appearance in court today in connection with the stabbing, said an official of the Grand Forks County Correction Center.
Moore’s wife is a UND student who has worked at Applebee’s on South Columbia Road for about four years, said another employee, who was working in the restaurant when it happened.
The victim was taken into surgery in Altru Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, employees were told.
An Altru nursing supervisor declined to release any information to the Herald on the woman’s condition.
According to an employee of the store, the man came into the restaurant on south Columbia Road between 5:30 and 6 p.m.
Moore had hit his wife on Sunday, giving her a “big, black eye,” said the employee. “She got a restraining order against him.” Moore arrived at Applebee’s on Wednesday with another woman and soon confronted his wife.
Moore began attacking his wife in the back kitchen area, where waiters pick up their orders from the cook, said the employee.
Moore stabbed the victim several times, including more than once in the head, said the employee.
He used a folding knife with an ivory handle and a blade that was about 4 inches long, said the employee. After stabbing his wife several times, she fell to the floor and Moore dropped the knife.
At that point, a cook grabbed him, and aided by one or more other employees, restrained Moore, said the employee, who asked not to be identified.
“There was a lot of blood,” said the employee. However, colleagues of the victim at the restaurant learned later Wednesday that her wounds were not life-threatening, the employee said.
Moore shouted threats against his wife, her family and the people restraining him, said the employee who was at the scene.
“If not for the employees, I think he would have picked the knife back up and killed her,” said the employee.
The woman who accompanied Moore into the restaurant fled the scene, said the employee. Police investigating the incident said the woman was thought to be driving to her hometown of Jamestown, N.D., and was being sought in connection with the stabbing, the employee said. An all points bulletin to that effect was sent to state radio, according to reports heard over a police radio, which described the incident as an attempted murder.
Applebee’s closed for the rest of the night after the stabbing.
Wow that is awful… The county I go to college in has the highest murder rate in the state, but it’s mostly families killing each other… That just shows the decay of values and the saturation of evil in our society…
