The New Year Begins

Happy New Year! The new year for my children did not start out so great. They got to listen to me rant and rave.

When I walked into the house when I got home from work I immediately smelled something burning. I was on the cell phone with Dick at the time and I told him “something smells hot I have to go find out what it is.”

I first pulled the cover off the furnace. (If you recall the trouble I had fall of 2002) Then I checked every heat register in the house to be sure there was nothing blocking any of them ~ the kids have a nasty habit of putting stuff over them. I found a pillow behind Tyler’s bed blocking that register. It was not hot enough to produce the smell of fire.

I checked in the garbage can. What made me do that is beyond me! I found a piece of paper that had been burned. I woke Nadine to get the scoop on the burned paper. I let her have a what for and a how come! I told her the danger of fire ~ you don’t take anything with you in the event of a fire, you get your ass out!

I was upset when I found ashes on the counter top but I went berserk when I found ashes on my computer desk! I am not sure what the hell went on here tonight but I do know that they were doing something that they should not have been doing! I lost it! They are grounded, they are not allowed to have friends spend the night for the rest of the school year, and they will not be allowed to spend the night with friends for the rest of the school year. No exceptions!

I can still smell fire! I hate the smell of fire. When I smell fire I see my home collapsing making a V-shape with flames shooting out the roof and windows. I hear Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple. That is the song that was playing as we were running to get out of the trailer.

I guess you have to live it to really realize the seriousness of a fire.

Dick is staying in town tonight. He was supposed to call me if he went out so that I could pick him up on my way home. He can bring in the new year without having to drive. He got a service call and when he got done with that he went to a friends house. I told him to stay in town and not drive home. I use the excuse that there are too many cops out because that hits harder than I don’t want you driving drunk, That line has never worked before. The threat of getting yet another DUI is mightier than worrying about killing someone. That makes no sense to me but it is the truth.

I better get to sleep. I have to get up in the morning. I may be the one driving Nadine’s friend home, I have to do the banking, and I open! The beginning of a new year also brings a new quarter. I have still a lot of paperwork to do even though I did a lot of it tonight.

I hope you all have a great year!
