Girl With The Most Cake
I may be getting a handle on things! Or maybe this is just the ebb in the constant ebb and flow. I’ve been swimming, eating like a normal human, and maybe not getting quite enough sleep but nothing crazy either. Finally cleaned out my inbox yesterday too – overall a productive couple of days. Yesterday I worked until around 6pm, then went home and S had made fresh mozzarella and tomato panini for us. Yum. Hung out a bit, then headed out on the subway to Williamsburg Bedford Avenue stop. It was super hot – we walked by McCarren Park and the air was muggy and dusty.
Got to the Warsaw, a funky part-time concert venue at the Brooklyn Polish National Hall around 8pm. Got checked through security, inside was nice and airconditioned, and the auditorium wasn’t too full yet. We grabbed a couple of beers and staked out a good spot in the center, about seven people back. The space was really funny, with a make-shift bar, nice balcony, and funny ornate moldings and light fixtures, combined with a disco ball. Vertical pictures aren’t the best use of space so I am also including photo of Friday’s Coney Island Steeplechase lighting. I like S’s new phone’s camera, but it doesn’t really zoom:
Opening band came on around 30 minutes later – they were a local band called "Starred." I wanted to like them but they were way too screechy. Loved their frontwoman’s bleached blonde Nico bangs and crazy caught-in-a-fishnet caftan dress though:
They played for 45 minutes, it felt like longer because of all the screeching. Then they reset the stage, which was really funny to watch because they seriously brought out like 10 or 12 towels, laid them out obsessively, then came and replaced them with black towels, then replaced those with white again, and took some away. Courtney Love and her band came out just after 9:30pm which was great, because we are old. It actually got super crazy with people pushing toward the front at that point, all I can say is I’m glad to be tall and strong. With pointy elbows.
Gold lame jumpsuit – awesome:
Show was great – they played a good mix of old faves, couple of covers, and some new stuff from the album supposedly coming out around Christmas. Courtney was super into it – playing guitar, thrashing around, throwing rose petals and guitar picks. Within probably the first 5 minutes she was already super sweaty, rubbed her eyes and recreated the mascara raccoon eyed look from the "Live Through This" cover. Total rock star – I loved it!
After about an hour they left the stage, a lot of people took off but we saw the stagehands refilling beers so we stayed. (And took their spots 🙂 Totally worth it – they came back on after maybe 5 minutes, Courtney had her face wiped off and changed into a cute black strappy shimmery dress, and they played for another 20 minutes, including "Doll Parts," which I was totally hoping she’d play:
Overall a great show, and a nice night out. We walked back to the subway and grabbed a drink at a charming little Williamsburg cafe before heading home. Took a shower before going to bed, slept like a log, and even packed lunch and snack for myself, which makes me feel like a champion of the world.
Sometimes it just takes acknowledging we need to be a bit better behaved (foodwise, sleepwise etc) to nudge us into be good. It’s about being deliberate, I suppose.

PS I answered your questions today 🙂

Oh my god, I’m old. I saw Hole back in 1995. EIGHTEEN YEARS AGO. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Glad you got to see such a great show. 🙂

As a Pollock myself, I’d love to visit this place someday. I love funky fun venues and I happen to LOVE Courtney =)

I loved Hole, but I can’t stand Courtney, sorry. Did they do any Babes In Toyland stuff? RYN: thanks!

RYN: In the UK, until recently at least, it was mostly powder. I don’t think I’ve seen liquid detergent that wasn’t in tablet form. Love the differences between the US and the UK!

God, I would pay so much money to see an actual old-school Hole concert. I’m going to have Doll Parts in my head for the rest of the afternoon.

RYN: I’m not sure either. I’m friends with Michelle Leon and Maureen Herman on Facebook. They occasionally meet up with Lori and post pics, but they never talk about Kat.

my halloween costume, sophomore year of high school, was inspired by the cover of live through this. found a jessica mcclintock dress from the 80s that was off white with pale pink polka dots and then tore it to shreds. the smeared black makeup was mandatory. so jealous you got to hear doll parts live! back in the day, my dad wouldnt let me go with all my friends to the hole & marilyn mansonconcert bc he was one of those super overprotective dads. i still haven’t quite forgiven him.

It actually got super crazy with people pushing toward the front at that point, all I can say is I’m glad to be tall and strong. With pointy elbows. I THINK THIS AT EVERY CONCERT. Amen!

Bad ASS. I would love to see this show.

Did Courtney seem normal (as normal as expected) or on drugs?

She rocks! Saw her in at a music fest here years ago screaming, cursing and throwing things. Dived into the audience, which was not a lot of people, almost fell to the ground. Totally effed up. But I LOVE the song Violet and Doll Parts. “Go on take everything! Take everything! I want you to!”

I sang that Hole song when I saw this title, but didn’t think this entry would actually be about Courtney Love. So freakin cool! I’ve loved Hole and Courtney Love since I was a teenager. Would love to see her.

RY: Thank you for that youtube link to the short film! It hit me like a ton of bricks, but in a good way. Too true. I was watching it for the first half and then the ‘**** em’bit started and I went ‘Oh, wasn’t expecting that!’ but totally related to the message. Seeing Courtney Love would have been amazing. Looking at your photo, I can still see that she does the same thing where she hitches up her leg on the foldback speaker the same as she has done ever since the 1990’s 😉
