She Loved The Sea
Chaos and poor lifestyle decisions continue. After staying up until 2am doing work last Sunday night, went to work early Monday morning, came home, S made dinner and we watched Mad Men and True Blood.
Tuesday was opening night of Shakespeare in the Park. I was hoping for nice weather but every single time we’ve gone, it rains! We girded ourselves with plastic ponchos and the show went on amidst the drizzle. "Comedy of Errors," shortest Shakespeare play. Party afterwards was a lot of fun. It was great to be out in Central Park at night, standing on wet grass in a clearing surrounded by trees, eating, drinking, dancing a bit, not staying out too late. For once.
Wednesday I went to work, met up with S afterwards, we got a bite at Rickshaw Dumplings and wandered around an amazing old curio shop. Seriously, the stuff in this shop could make me a hoarder. After that we stopped in to a party at S’s tailor’s place, but it was lame so we left. After that we went to Lumber Liquidators to try and pick out new flooring for my apartment. I know I really need to go with light colored boards but my eye kept being drawn back to Brazilian Cherry.
Thursday night we went to dinner at Dinner on Ludlow. Cute place but whole experience was kind of subpar, not worth being out late for. We had a nice walk home though. I love hot days that cool down after the sun sets for a comfortable but still warm night. When I got home S went to bed and I watched Miley Cyrus’ #WeCantStop video on loop for like two hours. While wearing a hot pink wig for no reason. Yeah.
Friday I was exhausted and so over everything. For once my Friday afternoon wasn’t completely packed so I went home early and took a nap until S came home. We had plans to go to the Coney Island Cyclones minor league baseball game and I was so close to bailing but S seemed to really want me to go so I rallied. We found a new way to get to Coney on the subway, which was much faster, and met up with his friends at Ruby’s on the boardwalk, then went in to the stadium. Game was nice, we had some beers which I really did not need in my completely overtired state. After the game we watched the lighting of the Steeplechase, which was totally worth coming out for. Then fireworks! Then a ride on the Cyclone! It was great. Subway ride home took forever. We got off the train at Canal Street then walked (ran) to Gilligan’s/Soho Grand just because I had to pee so badly. S asked me if I wanted a drink and I laughed in his face. Walked home from there and completely conked out at home.
Didn’t wake up until like 3pm on Saturday. Missed swimming, missed the Mermaid Parade (didn’t really have a costume ready so wasn’t too upset, but still.) We had VIP passes to a short film competition in Prospect Park so managed to drag ourselves out of bed to shower/make ourselves back into human beings and leave around 6pm. I had reservations about hauling my butt out to Brooklyn again but it was totally worth it. Great private area with food, drinks, and Malcolm Gladwell.
Many of the films were amazing – I was dazzled by the stories these filmmakers were able to share in less than 6 minutes each. All the films are available online, here are the links to some of my personal favorites:
Apart – This one had me tearing up, a silent animated parable about the distance between two souls. Didn’t win but I loved it. Same guys as "Unlikely Maestro."
The Unlikely Maestro – A magical story that reminded me of "A Cricket in Times Square." Won first place. How great was that book?
University Glimpse – Supercute musical short about the things you learn and people you meet in college days. Third place.
Rooftop Kings – There are people in NYC who act as shepherds of pigeons, caring for them in coops on the rooftops of the city. An unsentimental but loving profile of one of these gents. Interestingly the voice/style seemed familiar to me and turns out it was the same director as another movie I saw about 10 years ago, Lbs. Second place.
After the event was over we took the subway to the afterparty in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Interesting place. Cute indoor/outdoor venue, but S got annoyed with me for flirting with some dude (sincerely thought he was gay), then there was a fight outside, I broke my shoe (UNRELATED!), and we took a taxi home. On the way we decided it would be a good idea to eat dinner so we stopped into our local 24/7 joint to eat way too much food way after midnight. Epic utter fail.
Sunday was a total waste of a day, but we went to sleep fairly early at least.
Monday we watched True Blood and the season finale of Mad Men. I know people had mixed feelings on the episode but I was alternating hysterically laughing and tearing up – really wondering what’s going to happen next season. Moon River and the Hershey thing just killed me. Went to bed early, brought breakfast, lunch, and fruit to eat instead of buying junk, and am hoping against hope for a swim this afternoon/evening.
The Gandolfini thing has made me a little nervous. I don’t want to die that young. Maybe one day I’ll buckle down and eat healthy foods in moderation, stop binge drinking, go to sleep at a reasonable hour, live in a clean and organized house, stop buying cheap shoes, and exercise regularly. AKA give me chastity and temperance, but NOT YET.
Chastity and temperance are way overrated. 🙂

Love your entry title, one of my favourite lines 🙂 And don’t EVER do all that stuff in your last paragraph, you have the most action-packed and exciting life of anyone I know!

I really enjoyed this season of Mad Men, it goes by too fast. Again, there is promise for growth from Don for next season, maybe for real this time. Everything in this entry was much more fun and exciting that if you described an organized, alcohol free, workout filled, full night of sleep kind of schedule.

If you’re anything like me, in a couple years your ability to do a lot of that stuff will be curtailed just by pure biology. Around 34-35 my systems slowed way down and let it be known that they were doing so. I really liked the finale of Mad Men. I lost my **** at the Hershey thing. So much so my cat was concerned.

We used to walk to Houston’s Shakespeare in the Park from our apartment. I miss that. The day you slow down is the day the world stops spinning :-).

You lead an amazing life. And isn’t that why you do it; because in theory we could drop dead at any moment. You’re a fit, healthy, vibrant woman who’s living life in style. I admire you!

This is the first season finale of Mad Men that has me really feeling like I have NO idea where things will go. But wherever Don Draper goes, I will follow. Also, Gandolfini was not maybe in the best physical shape. I know plenty of not overweight people drop over from heart attacks, but that couldn’t have helped the situation. Man, what a shame to lose him so early though.
Warning Comment
I think I’m the only one that read this whole entry and only took away a disturbed feeling about the concept of 2 hrs of Miley Cyrus.

Must look up why Gandolfini died… But am pretty sure that he couldn’t swim like you do. Isn’t swimming the ultimate workout, health-wise? I’m sure your lunatic amounts of swimming cancel out a whole host of poor lifestyle decisions and then some.
Warning Comment
I’m on the NOT YET bandwagon, too.

We have a Shakespeare in the park here as well and I love it! Have you been to the Festival in Ashland, OR? Love that town and the festivals are always such a good time. Glad you got some sleep on Saturday, sounds like you really needed it. You’re no where near as un-healthy as Gandolfini. You’re super active and I’m pretty sure you’ll live to be at least 100 =)

The line from the Hershey’s meeting when he says, “And you want us to put that in our commercials?” made me laugh for like 5 minutes. I thought it was a great episode, with enough of an open-ended ending to leave me really curious for the next (last – boo) season.

ryn: agree. I actually responded to one with saying: “thanks! I hope England will be next!” haha
Warning Comment
ryn: oh Cher! Wish I could be there. P loves Cher so much (I have been forced to watch several concert DVDs on repeat…) and he is super psyched.

R: Oh yes, a lot of instant coffee does. The Starbucks ones are particularly bad… but again with the lower amounts of caffeine. NEVER AGAIN, unless I’m pregnant. Bleh!

RYN* Ha, no, just sleeping. I can’t feed the baby in a carrier, sadly. My boobs are too big.
Warning Comment
LOL @ Irena. Agreed!
Warning Comment
ryn Actually, I don’t think I’d be as embarrassed about that!

I always envision you exercising like mad a lot (or most) of the time! Any untimely death makes me reflect on things too…especially when I eat something really not good for me. A votre sante! I haven’t watched the finale of Mad Men but read some spoilers–I just couldn’t wait to find out what happened!

I am obsessed with that Miley Cyrus video. It makes me want to party for like a week straight. I just love her so much right now. Don’t worry, you won’t die young. I keep reading facts about how alcohol actually helps you live a longer and happier life and can even save you from radioactive poisoning.
Warning Comment
yeah, you’re way healthier than he was. I’m sure half his problem was lack of exercise and physical activity, and that’s something no one could say about you!
