HELP!- EDITED
THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WHO LEFT ME HINTS ON WHAT TO DO ABOUT MY OBSESSION WITH SHOPPING. AS IT TURNS OUT I WAS TOO TIRED TO GO SHOPPING AFTER MY ART CLASS. I JUST CAME STRAIGHT HOME! I DO KEEP VERY BUSY BUT I STILL THINK ABOUT WHAT I WANT TO BUY. TODAY I DID GOOD. TOMORROW I WON’T HAVE TIME SO THAT WILL BE GOOD. SATURDAY’S ANOTHER STORY.
I need help. All I think about is what I can buy and where can I go shopping. How do I get it out of my mind? I have been doing much better but I am still obsessed with shopping. I don’t want to go shopping but my mind still tries to convince me to go and BUY!!!!!!!!!!
I am trying to save money for the trip home. I am trying to pay off my bills.
BUT then my mind wanders to what can I go buy.
I know I am lucky that have so much.
BUT I SEEM TO WANT MORE!!!!
Anyone have a secret how to get over it. I guess it’s like AA.
I have to take one minute at a time and say NO! I won’t go.
Anyhow any suggestions would be appreciated.
Sometimes I just go to the library and take out books or buy books at 1.
Sometimes I just go to the Dollar store but WHY DO I NEED TO GO??????
WHAT AM I MISSING IN MY LIFE?????????????
sounds like a problem for you. not sure what you can do to stop it. but, maybe a trip to the dollar store to buy a small little thing for a dollar will help with that need to buy. maybe you should keep telling yourself no one minute at a time. or keep very busy so you don’t think about shopping. take care,

You love children so much….maybe you need to start using all the money you spend on shopping, to donate to a charity that helps children! And that would seem so worthwhile to you maybe that you soon would no longer be thinking of shopping! hugs, Nicky

Had similar issues myself. Still do to be honest. But money is tight for me now, so I limit my purchasing to used items from eBay or second hand shops. I found selling a lot of stuff on eBay really helpful in helping me see all the pointless stuff I have bought… Good luck with it

I’m very sorry and I don’t have a suggestion since I don’t care for shopping at all — but these other notes above are certainly some good advice. I especially like Woodsprite’s!

I love to shop as well. I solved the problem by making it my job to shop. I find stuff to resell on Ebay. It’s a win/win. One idea: you could contact some local charities that help kids…shelters, group homes, etc. Ask them what they need and buy stuff for them. I love to shop so much, it doesn’t even matter if it’s for me or for someone else. And it’s very rewarding to help needy kids.

Maybe you are feeling lonely. Getting out shopping you are around other people. I can give you a hint that might help, something I used to do. Set a limit, say $5. Go out and go to stores but do not take credit cards or bank cards, and only say $5 cash. You get exercise and you do not spend or accumulate much. For one thing that $5 may only buy you a bite to eat or something to drink. My friend and I are going to do that in the mall, mainly because we need to walk but not spend. Hope this helps. Love,

I really don’t care for shopping, my addiction is FOOD! But the way I handle the food addiction is to try and distract myself from seeing or being near food. If I stay away from it, I am all right. I think you simply need to stay away from the stores and busy yourself with other projects to occupy your mind on other things. Or maybe if you have a shut in friend you can do their shopping for them with their money of course. You will still get to shop and help them out too, it is a win-win!

Well you know I love to shop for baby clothes and I can’t right now and it is killing me. All you can do is stay home and suffer.

I strongly recommend seeing a counsellor. Meantime, find other things to fulfil you…immerse yourself in a Cause you believe it strongly, or do some voluntary work somewhere. Hobbies are good too but you already have some of those. Please get counselling. hugs P

I’m not a shopper myself – never really had the money to compulsively shop – but there are a lot of good suggestions here from your friends!

Some good advice here from your friends! You know what has made a HUGE change for my thinking? (Because I love shopping and ‘things’ too). I read blogs and watch documentaries about living simply and sustainably. It really motivates me to keep my buying to a minimum, and to not increase my load of ‘stuff’. I think educating ourselves is important. Have you seen this? It’s such an important little

video, worth watching: http://www.storyofstuff.com/ — it’s only a few minutes but VERY powerful. I love the idea above of just giving yourself five dollars to spend, so you get a bit of the ‘fix’ but don’t go overboard. Do you track every single dollar you spend? That has helped M and I a lot too… it’s shocking where our money goes!

I don’t like to shop and I don’t have money to shop but I love to dream about what I’d like to buy so I don’t think I”m help at all! Good luck. I think the minute by minute approach is probably a good one though.

I am a catalog shopper mostly, since I live so far from any stores– I was going nuts, $100’s in a day– then I started just dog earing the pages of something I wanted, liked, oohed and ahhed over– and by the next day, I am more discerning, and like/can use/want only about half of it. Then, by the third time I see that catalog, I realize I don’t want most of it/wouldn’t wear it/etc

A way to cut down –Instead of buying cheaper stuff, I saved for GREAT quality. So I didn’t feel deprived when I didn’t buy something. I knew that I was saving money for a GREAT item..better quality. You can cut down on purchases like that.

Set a goal–no shopping for (insert number here) days, then you can reward yourself with (insert something you want here) Keep lengthening the number of days between rewards.
