I have a little dreidel…

BORROWED FROM WHOWHAT WHERE

I love your explanations of the religion and its traditions, can you tell me how the dreidle thing works? Is it like rolling dice?

Well, I don’t know about rolling dice so…???

I can explain how dreidel works….

See back when the Greeks were trying to kill us, one of the decrees they passed down was that Jews were not allowed to study. The Jews did not let that get them down, they used their brain to make a good cover. See, groups would go and study and send someone out to look out for soldiers in charge of making sure the Jews were doing what the Greeks said. If they started coming the way of the studying Jews they would hide what they were doing by playing dreidel. So it just looked like they were gambling instead of studying.

The dreidels outside of Israel have a Nun, Gimmel, Hey, and Shin. That stands for Nes Gadol Haya Sham, which means a Great Mircale Happened There. In Israel it has a pey instead of a shin to say a great miracle happened there.

And here are common rules for what you get when you spin the different letters.

It is really easy to play and kids love it!

BTW dreidel is Yiddish, in Hebrew it is sevivon.

And if they can do it, you can do it too!

BTW I have a question about holidays and I shall address that soon. If you have any other questions feel free to ask!

I love how you explain your religion. I have learned a lot from you and I admire how faitful you are to all your Jewish holidays and traditions.

Wow that is interesting, I didn’t know that it was a teaching tool. Thanks for the info.
