Cajun Cultural Colloquialisms

Pappadoux Boudreaux was hired by a travel agency to host visitors and introduce them to Cajun ways. So he would take his pirogue down the bayou and meet them at the landing and boil up a mess of crawfish.

When they were done, he would pour the steaming hot boiled mudbugs on the newspaper-covered picnic table and instruct the newbies on how to eat them, “Pinch de tails, suck de heads, and be for shore dat you don’t eat no dead ones, no.”

Test question de jour: What did that mean?

The dead ones taste like rotten mud…and they don’t even have the same consistency. But why would a good Cajun even cook the dead ones unless he was half blind and didn’t notice they were on their backs with their little feet in the air when he sorted through them?? LOL

Ohhhhhh….wait a minute….it was all the beer he had before he mingled with de toureests, right? This was a trick question…

…and while we’re talking crawfish, I should mention I found some people who like ’em even better than Cajuns! Danes!! My God, can those people put the mudbugs away for a bunch o’ skinny folk! Who knew?

Am I having a blonde moment? Wouldn’t they all be dead at that point? It’s like when I ask the kids about if a plane crashes on the border between Canada and the US… where are the survivors buried?

Okay, I know I’m having a blond moment! It took me a minute to get it “suvivors are buried.” Good gravy I’m a dork. I don’t get the crawfish one. I feel like it should be some kind of trick question but it seems pretty up front…so I’m going to hold my peace and not answer. lol. I get pizza for lunch! Yay!

Oh yeah, and I guess I’m not very southern…I hate seafood. I used to LOVE battered shrimp but I think I had a bad experience with them as a child…same with fishsticks…can’t even stand the smell of seafood. Although I do like jumbolia (sp?) without the seafood. It’s good stuff. I was in New Orleans years ago and got to visit a jazz club and restaraunt. It was for band, go figure. ; )

Haven’t a clue.. I’ve actually sorta started maybe developing a leeeetle taste for the bugs.. so long as they are just the tails, that come in a big bag all clean and pink. Can’t do lobsters either, unless its just tail and no armor.

I don’t care what he meant. Pass the tabasco and get out of my way!

uuuhhhhhh……… I don’t know.

I just lost my appetite, and I’ve eaten my share of ‘dos mudbugs.

I know Cajun. If I had a life and a job I’d move to Nola. Of course, jobs in Nola, not so easy to come by. Now, for some mudbugs…*shock and shame* too much damned effort for the reward.

It’s “sweater day” 😉

Would you believe that Alta Vista’s Babelfish does not translate Cajun patois? Curses, foiled again.

Wasn’t there supposed to be some sort of sexual innuendo associated with the eating of crawfish? It was always a little hazy to me. I only know I got in trouble for wearing mom’s ‘Suck the heads and eat the tails’ shirt to middle school one time, but no one would explain to me why.

Good God. Nightmare flashbacks of being very drunk at Florabama. Make it stop!

Hey…what’s your e-mail situation? Should I refrain from sending one? LWM 143

My sister married a Boudreau from the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia and he has relatives down in LA. There are quite a few Nova Scotia Acadian descendants down there. I’ve always wanted to visit.

I like crawdads at least as much as any Cajun and I’ll mud wrestle ya to prove it! … or not. 🙂 I loved those little freshwater crayfish. I’d heard of them but I’ve heard lots of brags. Oh yeah. No brag, just fact. Yumyumyumyumyum. I even had them for breakfast.
