AM radio
I have been informed of the existence of a new radio station in Charleston that will, for the time being, deliver us from the awful, hideous, and endlessly puerile DJs and music of our present oldies station. You know, the one with 100 songs from the 60s and 70s that play in rotation so that you hear each one at least ten times a day, if you can tolerate listening more than a hour at a stretch. And the statiion where the DJs are laughing and joking about nothing, absolutely nothing, at 8:20 in the morning during the AM commute to work, and you want desperately to listen to music, almost ANY music instead of hearing their chirpy banter as in some horrible echo chamber.
Also, how many times can your sanity survive one more rendition of “I’m a Believer” by the Monkees? Sure, they were sort of cool in 9th grade in 1965, but staying power?? I don’t think so. And, “Daydream Believer?” Has there ever been a song that so needs to be relegated to the rubbish heap of pop music hits?
Well, this new station, this treasure on the AM dial, is “where all the good songs have gone,” “your escape from all the irritating music elsewhere.” Here, we can listen to all the Brenda Lee, Patsy Cline, Platters, Drifters, etc. we want without ten-minute interruptions for inane ads, call-in requests to the computerized oldies database, traffic reports, and mindless chatter.
Just real music.
“You don’t have to put up with obnoxious music anymore” — I just heard that on this new station.
Well, up to a point. As with any merely mortal contrivance, there is still the wheat and the chaff issue. While I love to hear old songs by “Bread” from the early 70s, I also know I will have to endure listening to Bobby Goldboro, Barbra Streisand (grit your teeth for that awful repetition and voice), Tom Jones and Frank Sinatra.
There’s no such thing as paradise on Earth. And radio stations represent the best and worst of what modern civilization has to offer.
I agree about some of the morning DJ banter. I generally listen to a smooth jazz station in the morning, and their banter is far less obstrusive. Is laughing at your comment of having to endure Streisand and Sinatra…two of the great voices of our century. Sounds like my kind of punishment…Hugs, xoxo

think I just invented a new word: obstrusive! guess it means obtrusive and invasive. hmmmm I like my new word…

I don’t listen to the radio…barf I listen to tapes and CDs – that way I can hear what I want. Well, with the exception of when Z rides – then it is Kidz Bop. But then, that’s a little better than playing “I Spy” – see, the problem with “I Spy” is that you must be quick – oh, and there’s not much here that isn’t green. :o) Oh, it’s a tree – “Yeah, but which tree?”

Uh oh, I am in trouble! I love Bobby Goldsboro and Barbra S. plus Tom Jones but I have to rally right up there with you on the Monkeys. But what do I know? LOL I hated the Beatles when I was young and even now, still only like a few of their songs. Yet, my radio in the car stays mostly silent but when I do listen to the oldies, it is FM97.5, KOWL, not TIX like I grew up with. Freewind

No wonder I don’t listen to the radio in the mornings. Anyone bantering at me early would just put me in a foul mood all day.

I am so not a morning person! I turn the radio off in the morning and enjoy the silence of the drive to work. As for music at home….I have invested in a CD player and select my own. This leaves Bobby G. out of the loop but protects my sanity! 🙂

Hmm…I don’t like loud dj’s, laughing and joking about nothing in the early morning. I walk to school. And you know what? Since spring is here the morning songs that accompany me to work are all performed by birds. It’s so beautiful, and when I walk rather fast in wintertime I now try to take my time and enjoy a slow walk. Did you notice “try”? This is, if I not first sit here too long. ;o)

A bit caustic this morning, Oswego? 😉 *laughs*

This certainly brings back memories for me. Oh my, the Monkees were a horrible group. Bobby Venten(sp?) and “She Wore Blue Velvet” makes me cringe. And Paul Anka singing “Corina Corina”. Oh my! Love,

I have 12 FM and 3 AM stations programmed into my car radio..and I still can’t find stuff to listen to most of the time LOL!

Satellite Radio. I can hardly wait until it’s affordable. NO COMMERCIALS. NO TALKING. Zillions of choices.

you know what gets me is i’m pretty damn liberal, but i get quite fed up with dj’s relying on shock-humor and vulgarity (mostly sexual inuendos and such) to keep their jokes going. one dj i listen to always makes mexican jokes and takes every opportunity to make phallic references and “money shot” references. gets old.

Our classic rock station seems to always have a LOT of the Beach Boys songs. And they play at least a couple of Beatles songs every hour too. I get tired of hearing the Beach Boys, but I still like to hear the Beatles songs.

The problem clearly involves avoiding each of our most hated singers and musicians–but an hour of silence is not what the station has in mind. I love AM radio and consider it a market yet to be capitalized on in this new century. Hate listening to the local dj’s who “talk” about (rant about) the day to day doings in town and around the world. Hate the religious programing, the alternative–

and think that sports reporting might be good but am not a sports fan. Wondering what could be there that I’d like better and the public would tune in to listen to. Maybe your jazz choice is a good one since I’m biased against all that I hear there. Sometimes I listen to short wave radio and enjoy programs from abroad.

um, how bout cd’s or books on tape? I rarely listen to the radio because i am too easily sucked into the commercials. My daughter makes me “mixes” of my old favs and some new ones she likes on her computer so a lot of times i go bare when it comes to radio. Maybe a little NPR fix, but that’s about it.

What, no Partridge Family? 😉

Since I’m reading backwards I know the end of this story…*sigh*
