Night of Two Moons

My daughter sent me an email saying that on August 27, Mars will be so close to the earth that it will look as if we have 2 moons.  I am not sure what time this will happen but we plan to pull ourselves out of bed whatever that time may be!  Apparently, no one alive now will ever see this again, as it will not happen again until the year 2287 or sometime like that.  A few years back we got up to watch the Leonid meteor showers fly across the skies.  We were bundled up with our blankets lying on lounge chairs on our backs facing the northwest in the darkness of the yard.  Ohhhhhh, ahhhhhhh, glorioussssss,  Just wanted to drop by and say Life is Good.  Hugs, Ollie

Ollie I looked this up on Urban Legends because it sounded fishy to me. I haven’t seen it on any news site. It’s not true. http://www.snopes.com/science/mars.asp In fact this email has been going around for at least 4 years. So stay in bed.

Ah, well, whether it’s fact or fiction, life IS good. I would get up in the middle of the night to oohhh and ahhhh over the sky anyway!

I was looking it up to see what time. At least now I don’t have to get up for it.

Gee, I missed seeing that ! Actually this made me smile though, as here in NZ there is a tv ad showing two possums on a darkened night road, watching the stars. A car comes towards them and one seeing the headlights says to the other “Look! two moons!”…..but of course its too late…. sad but clever and funny. hugs P

it didnt happen here in Australia…must be a northern hemisphere thingy. but we have a total eclipse of the moon tonight, Aug. 28th and the experts are saying it will turn blood red.

It would have been an awesome sight my friend…almost like a sci-fi landscape. Lovely to see you write!

RYN Neither of us has “private” insurance. The only private type of insurance available here is for extra frills like private hospital rooms. General private health insurance doesn’t exist. Drug coverage isn’t provided in all provinces – some provinces cover the cost of drugs and others don’t. So private insurance is available for prescriptions, eyeglasses, dental care.

Mars is about 10 times the diameter of the moon. By sim[le geometric projection, for it to look the same size as the moon it would need to be 10 times farther away than the moon. 10 X .25 million miles = 2.5 million. Mars is over a hundred million so it looks like it’s about 1/50th moon size.
