In which our Hero fills in some of the gaps by mentioning a walk from his walkabout
Here’s how badly I’m doing at keeping up with my social contacts. If you’ve been reading me long enough, you’ll recall my old friend Even. Well, a combination of bad timing and possibly a little of being unable to look away from my sweetie pie has led to me not managing to see her for a while. And just how long it’s been was emphasized by two things.
One, I told Nocturne I was going to go have dinner with Even, and my lady asked “Who’s that?”
And two, when I did find Even, she was just finishing a haircut, and when she stood up, I realized she was still pregnant. Which is not an unusual statement in discussion a human pregnancy that runs around nine months. Except that the last time I’d seen her, I was admitting that I was facing some serious feelings for a far away girl, Nocturne. Which means before the relationship that I just marked a second year of. As in, same Even, different baby.
Oh boy.
This time, she was coming back from an errand, so her hubby and kids couldn’t join us. I got to see charming pictures and video (the dancing was hilarious). But it also meant it was just us and we could be pretty blunt. Which meant that for the first time in, what 6 years, I got the *whole* story of how she and her husband came together. And she was hugely curious about my relationship so I was telling her about living la vida skypa. We talked about old friends, and caught up on other members of the summer camp where we’d met.
And then we just started talking. About souls, weirdly enough. She asked me if I believed in them, and what I thought a soul might be, and that question has been rattling around my head in the month since that conversation. Deep thoughts.
She pisses me off a little. When she was 17, she had long hair, but the current pixie cut just makes her look younger. Not just younger than me, but younger. And sure she’s got poise that no teenager could pull off, but she wears her years on the inside, where I’m greying and balding and scarred and betwitched and it just makes me feel how long it’s been.
And she’s pregnant. Again. Still makes me smile. Even’s a mom.
Beautiful and humorously shared. In the end I had a soft smile on my lips. Thank you.
