State of the OD Operations 2012 * *

In which our Hero finally fails to avoid talking about the OD operational situation and realizes that he’s just so tired of the topic and if he didn’t love you, Gentle Reader, he’d almost relieved for the site to fold and put itself out of his misery

Surprised anybody cares what I think on it, but in response to some notes, my answers to some questions asked and unasked.

About the blackout and the DM/Admin message.

I believe the acronym SNAFU covers the outage: Situation Normal, All Fucked Up.

The site was down for over a day. With no communication. Again.None of the people who have access to the Facebook or Twitter accounts had the time or opportunity to both notice and update either.

Response?

The Diarymaster screwed that one up. The admins are a backup system, but free help is always best efforts help, so the buck stops where the buck stopped.

I’m disappointed that nobody was in a position to both detect the outage and update the notification.

The DM occasionally points to the monitoring service that pings the OD servers to check if they’re up, which is the first thing I also check when a system is down. But while a failure is a failure, a successful ping does not indicate that the service is up and running. In fact for most of the outages we’ve had, that stupid indicator has cheerfully celebrated our uninterrupted up-time.

Internet services work in layers. Ping is a low layer. Ping is like checking your map to see if there’s a road to your friend’s house. But just because there’s a way to get there doesn’t mean your friend is home.

To find out if your friend is home, and free to talk, you call them.

To find out if your web service is serving, you consume content.

Here’s how.

Step 1A: Easy Peasy Chicken Squeezy

Simple version? Create a diary, lock it down, and then use curl or wget and pull a page from that diary.

If you get the same result as last time, the diary is up for readers.

Step 1B: De Luxe

How I’d do it? Create that same diary, make it private, and use a headless browser to log in, write an entry, write a note, read that entry, and then delete the entry.

Step 2: Spilled Beans

Run your checker every 3 hours. If the result is what you expected, post “Automated status check Ok” on your twitter feed.

If the result is not what you expected, post “Automated status check failed. OD may be experiencing issues.”

Why this way is better? It checks things from the user’s perspective. And it reports, up or down, like clockwork

And it doesn’t get busy with other jobs, or life. It doesn’t forget to send an update. And people know the current status. No questions “Is it up for you?” No “Is it back yet?”

Need more help, let me know.

About the LinkedIn thing

The problem with these online sites is that everybody uses them in different ways. So here’s a thought about LinkedIn.

You put your online working history out for the public to see. It’s a story. And the amount of detail you share will change over time. You may want to keep a moonlighting gig private.

The point is that it’s personal marketing. And the closer you get to the present, the more carefully manicured the story.

So as with a diary, a LinkedIn profile is not necessarily a lie, but neither is it a complete or accurate truth. It can sometimes illuminate possibilities, but it’s always a story.

(On the other hand, I was clapping my hands with glee that someone thought to check there. Clever use of social media!)

*Edit*

Some folks missed the LinkedIn thing, so for context, some enterprising folks tracked down the DM’s LinkedIn page which says that he was running OD from 1998 to 2011, which seemed to suggest that he’d left the OD some time ago.

I thought it was interesting detective work, but my experience, personally and with colleagues, is that we manipulate our resumes for the circumstances. And I just want to point out that behaviour pattern because I think it’s relevant

About OD being in trouble, going down

The Diarymaster has said that he can’t make a living off the site anymore. Honestly, I’m much more surprised by the possibility that this was his full time job, because I can’t see why I’d have done that in his shoes.

But making a living off the site means making many tens of thousands of dollars of profit on the site operations. Running the site means breaking even on the operating costs.

The fact that the DM is working does not mean that the site is in trouble. It really doesn’t.

On the other hand, the fact that the DM still doesn’t seem to get customer service, that’s a problem.

About taking over the OD.

The last time we were abandoned, I tracked down a contact number and left a message that I was prepared to make an offer on the business. It was not a joke, I had a price range in mind, based on my evaluation of the business at the time.

Of course I got no response. And that’s not an of course because the DM was being uncommunicative, but because it’s a viable profitable business. Maybe not where he wanted to get to, he’s no Zuckerberg, but I wouldn’t have sold either without exceptional circumstance.

Now, I’d consider it, but my valuation is lower. I don’t have the sitewide credibility to inspire confidence, and the community and reputation are damaged each time we have an incident that’s mishandled. And the platform is aging and pricey for what it delivers.

So I’m not especially interested in owning Opendiary.com anymore. But if the management would like my help, I’m here and willing.

About creating a new community

I was one of many dreaming of creating a new site and saving the community here. But the community is this big mass, and without drawing everyone at once, it just isn’t going to happen.

Basically, it’s not worth the effort unless I can persuade you and you and you and you to come with me, Gentle Reader. And it’s hard to persuade people without building the platform.

(And yet the idea of trying it excites me. How sad is that)

About how to find me if OD goes down.

I’ve just created a tumblr account for jackserin. So feel free to bookmark that, and if OD goes down, that will be the back up contact point until I have a better idea.

The diarist Kate also has set up a lifeboat mailing list. Check out her entry and consider signing up. And if you’re at all concerned about sharing an email address, I can highly recommend spamgourmet.com for your disposable email needs.

A closing remark

The OD has been a force for strength and change in my life. I have met great friends, and remarkable people who have made me see the world and myself so much more profoundly than I ever would have achieved on my own. It is not a small gift.

So thank you, Diarymaster.

*EDIT 2* 23 Feb 2012

…just communicating that the site is downand somebody is looking into it isn’t helpful – as long as you understand [the site isn’t going down – The Diarymaster

You make me cringe, sir. You’ve just missed the whole point. Communicating that the site is down and you’re working on it is *HOW* you convince people the site isn’t going down.

You set up two communication channels to notify of status during an outage. And then the site went down and you didn’t use them. It’s not the fact that we couldn’t see the diary for a day, it’s that we didn’t see evidence of you or your admin team in that time.

Are you really offering your services to the DM?! !!!!!!!! Build the platform. For fun. I dare you. 😉 You’re so interesting, it hurts sometimes. And sometimes, I wish I had your brain. Mine’s not so functional.

February 22, 2012

I hadn’t heard about his linkedin profile. Eh. I am sad that we’re still talking about all this…but that just proves where everyone is at. If I were Bruce..I’d be writing ANOTHER entry. At least TRY to bring up the confidence level.

Can I click the reader’s choice option on this, or would you prefer I not? The closing remark is golden.

Thanks for your insightful thoughts.

OD has been a force for strength and change in my life, too. I’d very much miss it if it went down. From the DM’s e-mail, I’d concluded that it was very lkely to do so, fairly soon, as revenue continues to drop to below the costs of running the servers. You’ve given me hope that it will be here for longer than I’d expected. Thank you.

February 22, 2012

I think you’re brilliant, and always have. I remember back when you helped me with OD backup before OD even had backup functionality. Bruce would be insane not to accept your help, I just imagine what a mere ten hours of your time could mean for the site! Anyway, I’m glad you’re my friend 😀

February 22, 2012

As you may remember, a couple of years ago the DM had links to his Facebook and Twitter pages right on the first page of OD ostensibly so we could check there in case of an outage (if you thought to save the links cause, of course, in an outage, that first page would be unavailable) but those were removed shortly there after. Likewise, he had a monitoring link posted to show the up time stats but that link service shows as “Monitoring suspended” and though there’s no date shown, I think it was discontinued two or three years ago … http://florida.websitepulse.net/uptime/L4449I11562.html Also, yesterday a little public records search on my part shows the New Jersey Open Diary business license was Revoked on 02/16/2009 for “REVOKED FOR NOT FILING ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2 CONSECUTIVE YEARS.” (New Jersey Business Gateway Business Entity Information and Records Service Business Id: 0600273713) The same agency also reports, effective on 08/16/2008, his private company, Ablesites, Inc. business license was also, “REVOKED FOR NOT FILING ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2 CONSECUTIVE YEARS.” (Business Id: 0100768007) (Continued)

Thanks for your note. I actually am creating a new site, and will market it from the ground up. I’m not interested in this web property…likely his valuation is much more than mine would be. As you know, it is more than just a url, it is a collection of hardware, proprietary software, membership data base, and a lot of headache, that would likely be priced much higher than it’s worth in profit. Yes, it could be turned around — but the investment to do so is substantial. The cost of mediating technical issues of the existing platform (or migrating the data), deleting or archiving thousands of defunct diaries, while dealing with the complaints and concerns of every paid and free subscriber puts the not-worth-it factor over the top for me. That said, I have over 250 likely migrants and the business savvy to carve a niche out of the social media market. I have a business model and a plan, and I’ve purchased http://www.diaryconfidential.com, and a few other relevant domains. Connect with me at Facebook and I’ll plug you into our OD Refugee group. Some smart people there brainstorming (and bitching.) lee@ionamoon.com

RNunzio: You don’t need a local business license to operate an e-commerce site.

February 22, 2012

In short, he’s doing business without a license, another barometric indicator of, “Not so good news.” I don’t fault him for having a failing business, it’s happened to some of the best of us in this recession, however, his lack of customer service awareness is (in my view) inexcusable. This owner defines the meaning of the word apathetic. Just one guy’s opinion. Here was another, back when I cared … http://www.opendiary.com/entryview.asp?authorcode=D116647&entry=20086&mode=

February 22, 2012

I really do wish someone with some business & customer service savvy would buy this place out. It’s ridiculous that diarists are going to the DM and saying “we will GIVE YOU MONEY if you do X Y or even Z” and he just continues to ignore them.

*Applause* Possibly even a standing ovation.

ryn: Someone beat me to it. On one hand, I think it’s great and should be read far and wide…on the other, it could bring crazies to your door. I don’t have to work Friday since I always take leave on 2/24. The day will consist of a morning appointment with a new therapist followed by redeeming my free coffee birthday coupon at Starbucks. From there, I will go home to Leo and find out what mysterious woodworking project has displaced my car from its guano-free garage this week. I’m moving past “embrace the suck” into “what is it that made suck so tolerable and comfortable for so long anyway” – hence, the therapist. And I’m learning how to make iOS apps for fun and profit. My best friend is a fitness instructor so my first project is making an app to show her schedule and all that good stuff. Are you doing anything awesome for yourself on Saturday?

I could get excited by a site run by you. Just saying. Thanks for the analysis… you are among the handful i’d miss reading. Agree with Kate, state registration not necessary and a needless expense for this kind of biz.

I have thought of many of the same things you have stated here

February 22, 2012

Hope this clears up the confusion. In my note above, I incorrectly referred to “New Jersey business licenses.” The term I should have used is, “Corporate Status Report.” Every State charges an initial and ongoing annual fee to use an entity (such as a corporation, LLC, etc.) when operating a business. (No matter if it’s Internet based or not.) <br> The business owner must keep the State informed of certain information and if not, they have the right to revoke your ability to do business through that entity. According to the source I quoted above, it appears, Open Diary, LLC, and Ablesites, Inc. have had their right to do business revoked by the State of New Jersey. This is public information and anyone can do the same search I did.

February 22, 2012

I too offered my help to Bruce back in the day and I was duly ignored. *shrugs* Excellent, insightful entry. As usual.

February 22, 2012

Im not sure whats going on but i must back up. It’s been awhile.

February 22, 2012

I so wish he would accept your help. Maybe if you ask the volunteers? They seem to be the ones in charge.

February 22, 2012

Well said.

If you build it, [I] will come.

February 22, 2012

I think you’re brilliant too.

I’m on board for a new site. Community here is great but OD is just in a miserable state!

February 22, 2012

RYN: Thanks for your note. I’m with you on the customer service issue. The DM only shows up with a song and a dance after there’s a forest fire in process, as he just did, and then he’s gone, along with his promises. It took me a while to pick up his MO but it’s clear to me now … like the old 56 Ford pick up truck I had in college … I put the least amount of money I could init, just enough to keep it running for as long as I could. The by line of this place should be: Open Diary – Home of Minimum Maintenance and Customer Service – Where You Can Write To Your Heart’s Content, or Until We Close, Whichever Comes First! (I wonder if he even knows it was his apathetic lack of customer service that broke his back?) 🙁

thankyouS. but if you need a platform, throw in religion. i hear it’s effective 😉

February 23, 2012

You’re such a rock star, my dear.

February 23, 2012

The best leaders know how to turn over tasks/projects to those with the skill and passion to do them. A poor leader is Bruce. Or lazy. There are obviously solutions – letting go of your pride and control enough to allow someone to implement them is the first step. 🙁

sleepy head.

Happy Birthday, S! Enjoy your movie and your Lady.

Check Alexa.com Who’d want to by that demographic

ryn: Thank you. I had a lovely birthday weekend.

Good entry.
